1b. Comedy app
According to a release, Laugh.ly has the most expansive comedy library available, which it made possible through direct distribution deals with media publishers such as Comedy Dynamics, as well as direct deals with comedians themselves.
Laugh.ly founder and CEO Dave Scott said in the release that there’s a “real hunger to access quality stand-up comedy anywhere and everywhere you are, so we knew the app would be in high demand. After such positive feedback in beta, we can’t wait to see comedy lovers everywhere start to use the product.”
During the app’s beta period, 1,500 users were given access to the app, and more than 4,000 others added themselves to the waiting list. Laugh.ly garnered an average 4.8 out of 5 star rating, and the average active user was streaming 46 minutes of content each day.
At launch, users can listen to ad-supported comedy content for free or have the option to sign up for the premium service, called “Front Row Seating,” for a $3.99 monthly subscription.
Alonzo Bodden, the winner of Last Comic Standing’s third season, said it’s often a struggle for comedians who work hard to develop content and ultimately get their material out to fans. Laugh.ly, he said, provides a new opportunity.
2. DUOSKIN-skin interface! I love the idea of being able to put a sticker on my arm that controls stuff, seems MIT and Microsoft are also fond of the idea!
Those stylish flash tattoos could do more than just look cool in the future. A team from MIT and Microsoft Research has developed a fabrication process called "DuoSkin," which can be used to make temporary metallic tattoos that double as on-skin interfaces. MIT Media Lab already demonstrated their capability in three different ways. First, they can be used for input to control mobile devices and computers, transforming your skin into a trackpad, a button or a slider. They can also be used to turn your skin into a display of sorts, changing colors based on your body temp. Finally, they can store data that phones and other NFC-enabled devices can read.
One of the team's lead researchers, Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao, said DuoSkin tattoos are pretty easy to make. You can use any graphics software to create patterns for the circuit and simply slap on a gold leaf layer on top for conductivity. A lot of research teams besides Kao's are also developing high-tech temp tattoos, but these ones look like something people would actually love to wear. 3. VR is the future and the NYT knows it!
The New York Times is acquiring an experiential agency known as Fake Love, which specializes in virtual and augmented reality.
The purchase is part of a bid for the Times to increase its revenue by offering additional ad agency services, and the most expedient way to do this was by purchasing existing agencies rather than creating new ones. The Times had worked with Fake Love previously on a special VR video adto promote a Weinstein Company film Carol.
Fake Love is a smaller company, only housing about 50 employees, and will be helping the Times fill special requests it's receiving on a regular basis, such as the market clamoring for chatbots and augmented reality projects thanks to the popularity of Pokemon Go.

ill require a couple thousand dollars’ worth of equipment and a spare room, but otherwise a new app should be the only other thing you need to create Pixar-style movies.
Mindshow, a virtual reality app in testing mode from downtown Los Angeles start-up Visionary VR, casts users as the director, actors and voice-over artists of their own computer-animated stories.
Pick a set. Choose characters. To animate them, move around and talk in front of motion sensors and a microphone that come with virtual reality headsets. Invite friends to play other characters if desired. Satisfied? Save and share on social media.
With the simplified process, Mindshow brings a low-budget Hollywood motion capture studio into the home. It’s the type of app that could entice masses of people beyond gamers to pick up virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. There are no outside characters today, but just imagine being able to entertain Facebook friends with animated spoofs of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Visionary VR declined to address when a full version of the app might be released or how it would generate revenue. But sponsored virtual props, ads in between videos watched on the app or upfront fees are all possibilities.
The company spent the last couple of years working up to the one-person movie studio idea. Starting in a home garage, co-founders including a music video maker and a visual effects veteran set out to develop software to produce their own virtual reality films. As it turned out, they found the best approach was doing the production from within the new-age headsets. And as they observed people’s behavior, they decided on letting anyone take advantage of the software.
“People come out [of the headset] activated with ideas and possibilities about what they can make,” co-founder Jonnie Ross said inside the company’s 43rd-floor skyscraper suite. “The way to communicate in VR shouldn’t be the province of a small group of people.”
The company unveiled Mindshow last week at Virtual Reality Los Angeles, a meet-up turned regular conference that it helps organize. The app is ready to go with about a dozen sets, but the plan is to add more customization and creation tools over time. People can watch the creations in near-3D in the headsets, or just pull up the videos in two dimensions on YouTube.
4. We want tech but we also want old school comfort and now you can have them both, I am talking about our writing! So, now there is an algorythm that can create your handwriting as clean or messy as it might be!
A team at University College London (UCL) is getting pretty close, however, with a new systemit's calling "My Text in Your Handwriting." A custom algorithm is able to scan what you've written on a piece of paper and then reproduce your style, to an impressive degree, using whatever words you wish.

The algorithm then works to replicate your handwriting style by referencing and adapting your previously scanned examples. You will have written the same letter on a number of different occasion, so the computer will look for the one that works best for the word or phrase it's trying to sketch out. A degree of randomness is then applied to ensure that the same letters and combinations aren't used more than once (an easy way for humans to figure out if a computer has written something).
5. Delta Airlines is an example of airlines wanting you to BYOD! Nice idea but without power sockets or access to all devices what is the point?
6. Got local sims this summer and made total use of google maps, great but you become over reliant! Sometimes it is nice to make a wrong turn, oh the map reroutes!
7. The new macbook pro! Do we want one?
Yep, the MacBook Pro is getting old: on that pretty much everyone can agree. The design seems almost frozen in time at this point (Dell XPS instead, anyone?). A comment under one of my recent posts expresses the sentiment of more than a few MacBook Pro enthusiasts: “Apple needs to release updated MBP, and SOON!!…Really tired of waiting, about to do the move to a win 10 laptop.”
Why the MacBook Pro redesign delays? One theory is that Apple has been holding back on the MBP overhaul because of the dedicated graphics (traditionally used in the larger 15.4-inch model). Until recently, smartphones have been getting priority on 14 nanometer silicon, forcing the graphics guys to wait. Essentially Apple and Qualcomm were taking up much of the 14 nanometer foundry capacity for smartphones. “The iPhone is delaying the Macs in other words,” Matte said. But that’s changed. AMD is now getting ready to go. “Nvidia and AMD are finally launching their new GPUs …it’s been a very extended cycle. It’s been painful for gamers and video editors,” Matte said.
The bad news is, the iPhone and iPad will continue to get priority in the future. “The iPhone is the priority. It’s the money maker. Anything bleeding edge on the component side is going to be mobile [iPhone] first.”
8. Still loving linkedin! Yet my kids have no connection and asked why they may want to give it a look.
In a study conducted by ROI Research, 59 percent of respondents said LinkedIn is their most important account on social networks. It is one of any career-minded professional’s most important personal branding tools because it is replete with features that not only help you stand out and get noticed, they help you do your job better. Here’s why:
1. It’s big! In fact, it is the largest professional network with over 400 million members (and growing). That means it gives you access – and makes you visible – to people from all around the world who can help you be successful.
2. It shows up first. When someone googles you, your LinkedIn profile is likely to show up at the top of the search results – making it a key tool for influencing those who want to get to know you. The links you provide from LinkedIn, leading people to your website and other sites that are important to you (LinkedIn allows you to include three outbound links in your profile), make the sites more valuable to Google. This makes them even more visible to people who are searching for what you have to offer; traffic generates more traffic when it comes to search-result rankings. Links to your website have more value with an inbound link from LinkedIn – just make sure you have your profile visible to everyone. Here’s how to do that.
5. It’s comprehensive. It’s your one-stop shop for managing all your contacts. You can organize your contacts using tags so you can communicate with subsets of them at a time. And they don’t even need to be LinkedIn connections. You can upload your Gmail contacts and iphone contacts too – keeping your entire professional network in one place.
6. It lets others speak for you. Personal branding is not all about you telling the world how great you are. It helps to get others help you tout your accomplishments. There are two ways LinkedIn lets you validate what you say about yourself –endorsements and recommendations. These features make you more credible to those who are checking you out. Just be sure to get endorsements for key skills and have recommendations from respected leaders in your industry.
7. It’s always available. The new version of the LinkedIn app gives you access to everything you need when you are on the move and gives you an opportunity to use those minutes (while waiting for the plane to take off or standing in line at Whole Foods) to reach out to connections – keeping those relationships in shape.
8. It’s exclusively focused on business. There are lots of social networks where you can post a picture of your family outing or your dog doing stupid tricks, but LinkedIn is truly the most powerful professional network for people who are serious about their career.
9. It helps you keep the saw sharp. LinkedIn Pulse provides access to luminaries and their latest thinking. Participating in groups and being engaged in conversations with your connections helps you learn and grow, benchmark processes, and innovate. You can also find mentors, source staff, and find people to coach and mentor outside your company – even outside your industry.
