- Google is pushing its AI camera. Wonder if we need one of these

At its Pixel 2 launch event last year, Google also revealed its tiny Clips camera, that uses AI to figure out when it should take a picture or video. Now the $249 device has quietly become available for purchase on its website, however as Android Police notes, it could take a while to arrive. Depending on the address used, I saw potential delivery dates between range between February 27th and March 5th.
So should you order one? While most cameras rely on your best guess about when to take a picture, Google Clips has had its AI trained by pro photographers. The 2-inch square has a shutter button 12MP sensor, 130-degree field of view and 16GB of storage to save up to 3 hours of selected video. Chris Velazco was impressed by the results during our hands-on test in October, but we'll need more time to find out how good it is at sorting through daily life for the highlights, and if we feel secure with its strategy of sending the results to a paired phone.

Once again the "drawing" option found in the "insert" drop-down menu is quite helpful. Use the drawing pad's free-form line drawing tool to create your signature and insert it into a document. You can do this with a mouse, but if you have a touch-screen computer it is even easier to do. Inserting your signature is a great way to personalize letters that you send home to parents.

It used to be that you needed a third-party application in order to use voice input in Google Docs. Now you can just open the "tools" drop-down menu and select "voice typing" to start using voice input into Google Documents.
4. A little reminder of when video was on tape and all about place and curation not data.
Andrew Glasebrook, FX designer under the name Morbid Decay, has built a miniature replica of a local video store, complete with cult classics lining the shelves, awkward interior design, and a nice layer of grime. The excellent replica is a reminder of a time when media consumption was distinctly tied to a place, instead of just to data. Video stores were curatorial and cultural spaces, essential for film buffs and casual moviegoers alike. To a film nerd, a good video store was a place of worship.

Poptheatr is a bucket that you put over your head. You put your telecommunications device on top of the bucket and then look up at movies, television, and pornography while you lie comfortably on your back. This keeps your hands free to manage your video playback using an included Bluetooth device.

It should be clear to all of us by now that the best way to enjoy video is flat on your back with a bucket over your head.
Early bird units cost $54 and will ship in July, just in time for your outdoor bucket head video watching sessions in a park or the courtyard of an abandoned school building. It will retail for $119.
Can’t wait that long? May I recommend cutting a smallish hole in the bottom of a Home Depot work bucket and putting it over your face? 7. Google Play has great number
Smartphone adoption in emerging markets just delivered the highest number of app downloads Google Play has ever seen in a quarter. According to today’s report from App Annie, Google Play app downloads topped 19 billion in Q4 2017, a new record. That also makes Google Play’s download lead over iOS its largest ever, at 145 percent.
Specifically, the downloads were driven by markets including India, Indonesia, and Brazil, which all contributed to Google Play’s 10 percent year-over-year growth in total downloads as well.

YouTube Gaming, Google’s rival to game-streaming site Twitch, is starting to pick up traction. According to a new report from Streamlabs, Twitch continues to dominate the live streaming space, but YouTube grew its monthly active streamer base by 343 percent over the course of 2017. Twitch, by comparison, grew 197 percent.
9. Who is at top of the India smartphone market?
Xiaomi couldn’t have wished for better timing of two reports that claim it has toppled Samsung to become India’s top-selling smartphone company.
The Chinese firm, which is reportedly on a roadshow ahead of an IPO that could value it as high as $100 billion, is said to have beaten Samsung’s sales efforts in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market behind China, according to new data from Canalys and Counterpoint.
Data from both analyst houses gave Xiaomi a narrow lead over Samsung in the final quarter of 2017, with 27 percent and 25 percent, respectively, according to Canalys — and 25 percent versus 23 percent, according to Counterpoint.

Following a series of scandals for YouTube’s video-sharing network, the company today announced it’s investing $5 million in creators who use the service in “positive ways” to create change and empower young people. The investment is going towards YouTube’s Creators for Change, its two-year old program focused on countering hate and promoting tolerance.
In its announcement, YouTube said the program has partnered with 39 creators worldwide since its 2016 launch, who have since released dozens of videos to promote empathy and understanding. This includes videos touching on topics like racism, the plight of refugees, and breaking stereotypes surrounding Muslim women.
The news of the continued investment is a much-needed breath of good PR for the video site, which has come under fire in recent months for hosting objectionable content, ranging from videos that seemingly exploit or at least terrorize children to the latest scandal involving a top creator’s filming of a suicide victim. YouTube’s most popular, PewDiePie, also used racial slurs in his videos…repeatedly.
As advertisers began to pull back from YouTube, the company changed its policies on vetting material for its Google Preferred program – promising to manually curate videos for its ad partners going forward.
