Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Sometimes it's also the hardest meal to put together, especially if you work. Add diabetes to the mix, and figuring out what to eat can be downright impossible.
What are the healthiest choices? Using an online nutrition website, like About.com'sCalorie Count, can make things easier. I researched some breakfast choices using the information from Calorie Count to compare different foods to see which breakfast is the healthiest.
A simple breakfast such as an egg, toast and breakfast meat, can vary greatly in calories, fat grams and carbs. How do different options compare?
A So-so Breakfast:
  • 1 fried egg: 90 calories, 7 grams of fat and 0.4 carbs.
  • 1 slice cinnamon swirl toast: 170 calories, 2.0 grams of fat and 33 carbs.
  • Sausage patty: 230 calories, 22 grams of fat, and 1.0 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 490 calories, 31 grams of fat, 34.4 carbs.
A Good Breakfast:
  • 1 poached egg: 71 calories, 5.0 grams of fat, 0.4 carbs
  • 1 slice white toast: 64 calories, 0.9 grams of fat, 12.0 carbs
  • 3 slices bacon: 103 calories, 7.9 grams of fat, 0.3 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 238 calories, 13.8 grams of fat, 12.7 carbs.
A Better Breakfast:
  • 1 serving Egg Beaters: 30 calories, 1.0 grams of fat, 1.0 carbs
  • 1 slice whole wheat toast: 87 calories, 1.2 grams of fat, 14.5 carbs (2.6 grams of fiber makes this a better choice than white toast)
  • 1 serving turkey bacon: 52 calories, 4.2 grams of fat, 0.3 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 169 calories, 6.4 grams of fat, 15.8 carbs.
The Best Breakfast
  • 1 egg white omelet: 16 calories, 0.1 grams of fat, 0.2 carbs
  • 1 slice mixed grain toast: 75 calories, 1.2 grams of fat, 12.3 carbs
  • 1 slice of ham: 46 calories, 2.4 grams of fat, 1.1 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 137 calories, 3.7 grams of fat, 13.6 carbs.
*If toast is buttered, add 36 calories and 4.1 grams of fat to your breakfast total.

FRIDAY, Sept. 26, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Black mothers who don't breast-feed may be at higher risk for an aggressive type of breast cancer, a new study suggests.
Researchers analyzed data from nearly 3,700 black breast cancer patients. About one-third of them had estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer -- a tumor subtype that is more common in black women and carries a higher risk of death.
Women with children were one-third more likely to develop these estrogen receptor-negative breast tumors compared to those who never had children, according to a team led by Julie Palmer, professor of epidemiology at Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center.
However, whether or not a mother breast-fed her infants seemed to influence her risk for the tumor, the study found.

ent Medical News Today articles have examined some of the downsides of antibiotic prescription. Now, a study published in JAMA Pediatrics finds that the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in children under 2 years old is associated with increased risk of obesity in early childhood.
From the moment we are born, the colonization of our intestines by a variety of bacteria begins. Evidence suggests that different intestinal bacteria may differently affect the growth of the host.
Currently, 1 in 3 children and adolescents in the US are either overweight or obese. What is more, this obesityis not simply a consequence of unhealthy behaviors in adolescence - by the age of 24 months, 10% of children are obese.

A study presented at the 5th American Society for Microbiology Conference on Beneficial Microbes in Washington, DC, provides food for thought on these questions.
The researchers will carry out clinical trials to test how well ammonia-oxidizing bacteria treat acne and diabetic ulcers in human patients.
Researchers from the biotech company AOBiome are developing a skin product that they hope will one day treat skin disorders like acne and ulcers by restoring levels of a friendly type of bacteria known as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB).

MONDAY, Sept. 29, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Obesity and inflammation in late adolescence are associated with increased risk for colon and rectal cancer in adulthood, a new study of Swedish males suggests.
The 35-year study found that 16- to 20-year-olds who were obese had more than twice the risk of developing colon or rectal cancer compared to normal-weight teens.
And teens with high levels of inflammation had a 63 percent increased risk of developing colorectal cancer, compared with those with low levels of inflammation, researchers found.

Climate change and world health some big issues!
By 2050, many US cities may experience more frequent extreme heat days. For example, New York and Milwaukee may have 3 times their current average number of days hotter than 32°C (90°F). The adverse health aspects related to climate change may include heat-related disorders, such as heat stress and economic consequences of reduced work capacity; and respiratory disorders, including those exacerbated by fine particulate pollutants, such as asthma and allergic disorders; infectious diseases, including vectorborne diseases and water-borne diseases, such as childhood gastrointestinal diseases; food insecurity, including reduced crop yields and an increase in plant diseases; and mental health disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, that are associated with natural disasters. Substantial health and economic cobenefits could be associated with reductions in fossil fuel combustion. For example, the cost of greenhouse gas emission policies may yield net economic benefit, with health benefits from air quality improvements potentially offsetting the cost of US carbon policies.
Conclusions and Relevance  Evidence over the past 20 years indicates that climate change can be associated with adverse health outcomes. Health care professionals have an important role in understanding and communicating the related potential health concerns and the cobenefits from reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The influence of mobile on coming holiday sales is starting to be projected as a portion of the more than $900 billion spending expected.
Total in-store and online holiday sales are going to increase 5% from last year, reaching up to $986 billion, according to the latest annual forecast.



Google and structures Snippets!
Google's latest addition to its web search is "structured snippets", which incorporate facts and data points into individual search results. While this may sound a little confusing at first, it's actually pretty useful. For example, if you search for a "Nikon D7100 camera", Google now displays basic facts about the camera in a box directly under the organic search links. Search for "superman", and in addition to the Wikipedia entry, Google will now show who created Superman (Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster), Superman's place of origin (Krypton, of course), and his first appearance (Action Comics). Google says fact quality will vary based on page content as the search giant continues to enhance the relevance accuracy of facts on display. Snippets are also appearing in smartphone searches.

Eyeo makes adblockplus cool company!
A report released earlier this month suggests that more Internet users block ads than ever before. As of June 2014, nearly 150 million browsers have some kind of ad-blocking tool installed, according to research from PageFair and Adobe. And oftentimes, that tool is Adblock Plus.
Available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer, the browser extension that many simply refer to as ‘ABP’ has been downloaded more than 300 million times to date.

Hootesuite is a money machine! I use it.
HootSuite may have to change its name to LootSuite. The social media marketing firm on Thursday announced closing a $60 million venture round, bringing its total raised to date to $250 million. A Boston-based asset manager led the latest financing, with participation by existing investors Accel Partners, Insight Venture Partners and Omers Ventures.
Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Boston-based Fidelity Investment was leading a group providing additional funding for HootSuite. The Vancouver-based company offers a platform allowing marketers to create and manage ad campaigns across social properties including Facebook and Twitter.

Opennit a robotic loom !  VERY COOL!


OpenKnit is the open-source digital fabrication tool that will knit you a jumper in under an hour.
The automated loom has been built by Barcelona-based designer Gerard Rubio, and its novelty lies in the fact it is not only relatively affordable to build from the instructions posted on Github (under €550) but there is already something of an ecosystem around the venture. Collaborators Mar Canet and Varvara Guljajeva have designed the Knitic software that lets you input parameters for the machine to adhere to, to tailor the garment; and Takahiro Yamaguchi has launched DoknitYourself, a place to share all the digitally designed knitted clothes already made using it. To be fair, the latter only seems to be populated with a handful of Rubio's own designs, but the intent is there nonetheless.

Enter Invisible.im, a group formed by Australian security journalist Patrick Gray. Last July, Gray announced that he was working with HD Moore, developer of the Metasploit Framework tool used by security researchers to pen-test systems, and with another respected security professional who goes by his hacker handle The Grugq, to craft a secure, open-source encrypted chat program cobbled together from parts of existing anonymity and messaging systems -- such as Prosody, Pidgin and Tor. They wanted a system that was highly secure, user friendly and metadata-free. Gray says his primary motivation was to protect the anonymity of sources who contact journalists.

Air Hollywood, an aviation-themed film studio, is now offering the Pan Am Experience, an immersive jaunt back to a world where orange was a fashionable color and in-flight menus featured items like chicken in wine sauce, grilled filet mignon, and cognac.
The experience takes place in a re-creation of a Pan Am 747, complete with first-class and clipper-class cabin seats. You'll be treated to cocktails, dinner, and video and audio selections suited to the time period. "Everything from the china to the glassware is authentic with careful attention to the exquisite service delivery of the era and menu offerings of Pan Am," Air Hollywood promises. The flight attendants are all decked out in original uniforms, complete with gold buttons, wide collars, and weird beige and blue colors.

CarTalk Monday Sept 29

And here we go again the boys from Motoringme are in the house and we are talking cars.

I must say we got off to nothing short of a great start with Fraser almost taking over the show with all of his automotive exploits!
