The CarClinic November 7, 2017

So, you own a car and you are feeling that you are being held hostage by the dealer or agency as we call them in the UAE.

Glenn is here to help you feel a little more at ease when it comes to your car repair issues.

Just a random image of 2 cars that don't need a lot of repairs this week and there is absolutely nothing about the Mustang on the show.

The Wrangler on the other hand is a piece of art that at 200,000KM does get a little TLC.

So, the show is simply about fixing your car and we had some great calls about A/C this week and manufacturers milage ratings.

Glenn is a mechanic and he calls it as it is.

Click to hear the podcast.

The Notes.

  1. Can a battery be fine one day and dead the next
  2. Squeaky fan belt is it on its way out
  3. Thoughts on workshop service plans, good or a waste
  4. Any idea about car storage for the summer
  5. How long can i expect tires to last in the uae
  6. Driving an Lancer, old and when I have the gas to the floor I am getting almost no rpm I was told it may be the catlytc what are they talking about
  7. I recently had to have a valve job performed on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo's 4L Inline 6 engine due to a sticky valve condition stemming from carbon deposits. After the valve job, my mechanic recommended use of premium fuel but the spec is lower do I trust the mechanic

  8. My check engine light is on and the tester says that the MAP sensor needs replaced. What is that?

  9. Cool article of red flags!

10. Bring auto repair to schools!

GetFitRadio September 30

Zelda Higgins the Fitness Coordinator at Zayed University joins me to talk the bare facts about fitness and health.

You can contact Zelda at zeldahiggins7@gmail.com.

This week we spoke about body image and started to understand that some people want to put on weight and the process is much the same as losing it!

And here is a quick guide to the topics we spoke about.

Love this look at healthy eating!

Dream Big Mural on the outside of the Fitness Center

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Sometimes it's also the hardest meal to put together, especially if you work. Add diabetes to the mix, and figuring out what to eat can be downright impossible.
What are the healthiest choices? Using an online nutrition website, like About.com'sCalorie Count, can make things easier. I researched some breakfast choices using the information from Calorie Count to compare different foods to see which breakfast is the healthiest.
A simple breakfast such as an egg, toast and breakfast meat, can vary greatly in calories, fat grams and carbs. How do different options compare?
A So-so Breakfast:
  • 1 fried egg: 90 calories, 7 grams of fat and 0.4 carbs.
  • 1 slice cinnamon swirl toast: 170 calories, 2.0 grams of fat and 33 carbs.
  • Sausage patty: 230 calories, 22 grams of fat, and 1.0 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 490 calories, 31 grams of fat, 34.4 carbs.
A Good Breakfast:
  • 1 poached egg: 71 calories, 5.0 grams of fat, 0.4 carbs
  • 1 slice white toast: 64 calories, 0.9 grams of fat, 12.0 carbs
  • 3 slices bacon: 103 calories, 7.9 grams of fat, 0.3 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 238 calories, 13.8 grams of fat, 12.7 carbs.
A Better Breakfast:
  • 1 serving Egg Beaters: 30 calories, 1.0 grams of fat, 1.0 carbs
  • 1 slice whole wheat toast: 87 calories, 1.2 grams of fat, 14.5 carbs (2.6 grams of fiber makes this a better choice than white toast)
  • 1 serving turkey bacon: 52 calories, 4.2 grams of fat, 0.3 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 169 calories, 6.4 grams of fat, 15.8 carbs.
The Best Breakfast
  • 1 egg white omelet: 16 calories, 0.1 grams of fat, 0.2 carbs
  • 1 slice mixed grain toast: 75 calories, 1.2 grams of fat, 12.3 carbs
  • 1 slice of ham: 46 calories, 2.4 grams of fat, 1.1 carbs
This breakfast adds up to 137 calories, 3.7 grams of fat, 13.6 carbs.
*If toast is buttered, add 36 calories and 4.1 grams of fat to your breakfast total.
Check out more food choices using Calorie Count, and build more healthful meals.

Sugar's Long-Term Effects Aren't Sweet

Most foods containing sugar, especially refined white sugar, have very little nutritional value and are often referred to as "empty" calories. Beyond this, insulin is also secreted in proportion to the amount of sugar consumed. Since insulin is the only hormone that instructs the body to store energy as fat, it's a nemesis if it becomes too high. Repeatedly eating sugar throughout the day eventually leads to chronically high insulin and ultimately to insulin resistance.

Let me explain. Imagine insulin as a truck that carries sugar into cells and enters the cell upon arrival by using the garage door opener. Think of insulin resistance as the insulin truck arriving at the cell, but the garage door opener won't work until six insulin trucks are waiting, rather than just one. Soon, we will have a traffic jam of insulin trucks throughout the body, or chronically high insulin. At this juncture, weight loss becomes very difficult and there is often an increase in blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, abdominal fat, breast and prostate cancer risk and more. Need a few more reasons to avoid sugar? Here are some of the hormonal and health consequences of having a sweet tooth:

Your Best Sweetener Options

For optimal health (and insulin levels) I recommend that you cut out or reduce your sugar intake. Sugar comes in a variety of forms and faces, including: table sugar (sucrose), rice syrup, maple syrup, honey, agave syrup, foods/drinks containing high fructose corn syrup, packaged foods, candies, soda, juice, etc., as well as sucralose, aspartame, saccharin and all other forms of artificial sweeteners. Instead reach for natural alternatives such as date paste, raisins, honey, apple sauce, coconut sap, erythritol and stevia. Spices such as cinnamon, vanilla or cocoa can also add flavor and sweetness to recipes.
