a solid "try before you buy" system, which lets consumers get some hands-on time with items before committing to a full purchase. This is even more useful when customers are looking for big-ticket items like fancy wearables and high-end cameras. Big-box electronics retailer Best Buy has partnered with gadget rental startup Lumoid to provide just such a system, which is due later this month.
According to ReCode, Best Buy you will soon be able to rent items like cameras, wearables and audio devices with a featured button on Best Buy's website. A Best Buy spokesperson confirmed to Engadget that drones will not be on offer through the rental service.
Best Buy's website will have a button that sends you to Lumoid's site to manage the actual rental of these items, many of which may be "open box" returns instead of new items. You'll earn about 20 percent of the rental price in Lumoid credits, which can then be applied to a purchase of the rented item. Best Buy gets to breathe new life into items people have already bought and customers get to check out big-ticket items for a low monthly fee.
This new program could give Best buy an advantage over Amazon, which does not currently offer a similar rental service. Letting customers rent a higher-priced item like a Sonos speaker, Sony Alpha camera or Apple Watch could get them the time they need with the device to decide if the purchase is worth it. Lumoid's founder, Aarthi Ramamurthy, says that wearables get the highest conversion rate from rental to purchase, with one in three renters deciding to buy after the try. We've reached out to Lumoid for more details on this partnership and will update this post.

On Monday, a federal appeals court voted to uphold the block on Donald Trump’s travel ban, citing one of Trump’s own tweets in its reasoning. The ban would’ve blocked refugees from six countries from entering the US. In the court’s opinion, the second version of the travel ban—which Trump himself tweeted was a “watered down, politically correct version” of the original—neither justifies targeting those countries nor clears the legal bar of not being discriminatory against people entering from those countries.

Is Tesla moving into home solar or is that Google???
Google is hoping that some good old-fashioned peer pressure will push more people to embrace solar energy.
Project Sunroof, the search giant's solar panel mapping tool and calculator, is adding a nosy new feature, Data Explorer. Now, when you pull up an address using the tool, which visualizes how much sunlight hits each building in an area, you won't just see which roof is best suited to harness solar energy. You'll also be able to select an option to check out a map tracking every rooftop that's already outfitted with solar panels in the area.
The whole idea is cool but man people and privacy is a thing of the past!

Cool idea from Samsung!
Samsung said it would consider refurbishing its huge supply of recalled Note 7 phones. The latest word suggests that the refurbished phone — reportedly dubbed the Note 7 FE (which stands for Fan Edition) — could launch July 7 in South Korea, this time with Samsung's smart assistant Bixby, according to ETNews (Korean).
If true, Samsung's move would be one more step in patching up the saga of its Note 7 recall, which took 3 million phones off the market after units began catching fire. The episode also prompted Samsung to revise its process for checking phone safety before shipping.
Before the recall, the Galaxy Note 7 was one of the best-received and best-selling Samsung phones ever. It's possible that a new edition would placate fans looking for a new or nostalgic device before its update, the Galaxy Note 8, arrives later this year.
Although it's been reported that the refurbished Note 7 is being sold in only a few markets (and not the US), the suggestion that it'll come with the Bixby assistant is new. Bixby Voice, which is like Apple's Siri assistant, has only launched in Korea so far.
If Bixby comes to the Note 7 FE that would make it the second phone to feature the AI, after the Galaxy S8. Bixby is a huge part of Samsung's strategy going forward, but if it wants to compete against Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant and Apple's Siri, it'll need to find its footing on more phones -- and get voice features into more markets (we're still waiting for a US release), for example)
Sony has a cool EInk banded watch we may never see.
Update: The Sony FES Watch U E Ink watch is now on sale in Japan from Sony’s First Flight crowdfunding site, and a number of fashion boutiques.
It may have begun as an experiment, but two years later, the Sony FES Smartwatch seems like a resounding success for internal crowdfunding. After hitting stores for the first time in November 2015, this E Ink watch underwent innovations and renovations yet again last November. The pretty little wearable features both an E Ink display and an E Ink band, and no matter how wild your imagination may run, this watch can handle it. And now, the FES Watch U has been made available in Japan.
Those in Japan can buy the watch from Sony’s First Flight crowdfunding site, and a number of fashion boutiques in Tokyo are carrying the piece as well. The “premium black” model will set you back 60,000 yen ($544), and the regular steel finish costs 46,000 yen ($417), with the option of either a black or white strap. Both options are more expensive than the original E Ink watch that went on sale a couple years ago, but it doesn’t look like any of them will be sold outside Japan.
The FES Watch U already pairs with your phone to control its design, but whereas users could previously only determine the appearance of the watch face, now wearers can change the band’s style as well. A single FES Watch U can now host a whole slew of design possibilities, so you’ll only ever need one watch for any and all of your outfits.
