New Amazon Fire TV Cube Lets Consumers Change Channels With Alexa
- by Chuck Martin , Yesterday
Amazon is launching a new Alexa-controlled TV device called Fire TV Cube.
The device, available starting on June 21, is a 4K Ultra H, Alexa-powered streaming media player that can control a TV from across the room.
The cube can integrate with a compatible TV, sound bar, audio video receiver and cable or satellite box and can be used to turn a TV on and off, change the volume, switch inputs and change channels, all by voice. For example, a consumer could say “Alexa, tune to ABC.”
“We believe voice makes it easier for customers to control their entertainment systems and watch the TV and movies they care about,” stated Marc Whitten, vice president of Fire TV. “It’s just the beginning. Amazon Fire TV Cube will only get better over time with the Alexa service always getting smarter.”
The Fire TV Cube has eight microphones and advanced beaming technology and is compatible with set-top boxes from Comcast, Dish and DirectTV. The device, which started preorders today, sells for $120 or $90 for Prime members.

During her keynote address “Podcasting: Building Consumer Connections and Revenue for Publishers” for MediaPost's Publishing Insider Summit, Gina Garrubbo, president and CEO of National Public Media (NPM), delivered some interesting numbers: 65% of consumers with smart speakers never want to go back to life without one — despite privacy concerns and 42% consider the devices essential to their lives.
Podcasts have become a ubiquitous, if not essential, way for publishers to expand their brand and revenue streams. Just this week Fast Company and The New York Times announced new podcast series. The New York Times “Daily” podcast is a perennial favorite. Indeed, NPR has long been the standard for the podcast model.
Fitbit news
Wearable brand maker Fitbit has shipped more than 1 million Fitbit Versa devices since its general availability and its new female health tracking feature has already been used by more than 2 million users, the company announced.
The health and fitness smartwatch, which sells for $200, which went on sale on April 16, has a four-day battery life and includes phone-free music and wallet-free payments.
Overall shipments of wearable bands grew 35% to 21 million units in the first quarter of this year, according to the latest research from Canalys. Smartwatches now make up about a quarter (24%) of Fitbit’s band shipments.
The female health tracking feature seems to be catching on, with more than 1 million users tapping into it within the first two weeks of its introduction.
“The positive response to Versa shows that we are filling this void and well positions us to gain share of the fast-growing smartwatch market,” stated James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit. “The engagement we’ve seen with our new female health tracking feature further demonstrates the value our users see in being able to get a more comprehensive look at their overall health and wellness, in a single place, in a way that other available cycle tracking tools cannot.”
