oct 30 credit and phone privacy
It has been 10 days since you could not use mastercard or visa at Dubai petrol stations.
The general feeling is that things are ok.
Many people are adapting.
Some are buying less and saving more, imagine.
During the second hour we spoke about a technology being tested by MOTOROLA to allow your phone to send you more specific ads based on what you are talking about and your location.
29-Oct-07
Motorola has developed a system that will monitor phone calls and text messages and will pass the information to advertisers. The technology would enable brands to target people based on their location and plans for the day.
The US handset manufacturer stresses that it is only testing the technology and that it would only ever use it with the consent of consumers – possibly in return for cheaper calls. But the news has already sparked "deep concern" among privacy groups.
Under Motorola's plans, software would be installed on mobile phones that would allow it to search for related words in text messages. If words such as "food" or "hungry" were detected, for example, ads for restaurants in the area could be sent to the user. The technology is currently based around searching text messages but could also be applied to voice calls.
Motorola's chief marketing officer Kenneth Keller says: "We have a technology which allows us to search, to understand not only where that person might be but also what their interests might be. You figure out if the person is going out for dinner or shopping and trying to find a particular retail outlet, for example."

Advertisers Stretching the Truth Too Far?
In one case a huge electronics company has said, "if you cannot find it in the store it is yours for free!"
Yea, right, only on some things! NEVER SAID THAT IN THE RADIO ADS.
How about a car for 975, an ALTIMA!
Yea sure...
Why are advertisers not being held to account for misleading the public with what they say or do not say?
The short and sweet answer is that they, companies are simply doing what they can!
Creating the truth is what companies do and as one caller said business is war! So you do what you have to do to win!
If you are concerned in Dubai the Economic Department has a consumer protection number
04-202-0233
One caller said the above number was not too helpful, you be the judge.
Why is the IIA not helping to set up an industry fueled code of conduct? Maybe spin of an advertising standards council?
Why as consumers are we not talking about offenders in the ad industry?
Why, Why, Why?
