1. thoughts on lack of sleep and depression.

Researchers at the University of Texas Health Center in Houston tracked the sleep habits of more than 4,000 teens for over a year and found that youth who don’t get enough sleep are four times more likely to develop depression compared to peers who sleep more. In a separate report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that 70 per cent of American high-school students fall well short of its recommended nine to 10 hours of sleep a night.

2. wifi and health?

Though most parents and educators celebrate the move, some are raising concerns about the possible health impacts of the radio-frequency (RF) radiation on which wireless technologies operate. Exposure levels to this kind of radiation, which fall in the same frequency bandwidth on the electro-magnetic spectrum as radios, televisions and mobile phones, continue to rise as wireless technologies become more prevalent.

Canada’s current guidelines on RF exposure are in line with those of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection – the largest regulatory body in this field. But many other jurisdictions have adopted considerably lower limits, either as a precautionary measure or because they view the science differently.

Thoughts of Fast Food Hinder Your Ability to Derive Happiness from Small Pleasures

Research participants who had seen a picture of a fast-food burger and fries subsequently rated themselves less happy upon viewing 10 photographs of natural scenic beauty (4.86, on average, versus 5.45 on a seven-point scale), say Julian House and two colleagues from the University of Toronto. Exposure to the idea of “fast food” makes people more impatient and impairs their ability to derive happiness from pleasurable stimuli; this effect could have a long-term negative effect on people’s experienced happiness, the researchers say.

The Show.

If you need NHS help for common problems such as anxiety or mild depression, you won’t necessarily meet your therapist face-to-face. You could be at home or even by the pool, typing your emotional secrets into a dedicated instant messaging service. You might be following a computer program that takes you step by step through a CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) programme, or having a digital face-to-face on Skype.

A popular medical management tool is now available on iPads and iPhones, thanks to Mission Pharmacal Company.
The San Antonio-based pharma company sponsored the development of an app that helps doctors in treating kidney stones.
For more than a decade, physicians have turned to the highly regarded "ABCs of Medical Management of Stones" booklet for a simple, step-by-step approach to the diagnosis and treatment of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones). Now the education tool is available as an easy-to-access, easy-to-use mobile application for Apple devices.

Tablet computers are so easy to use that even a 3-year-old can master them.
And that has some pediatricians and other health experts worried.
Since navigating a tablet generally doesn’t require the ability to type or read, children as young as toddlers can quickly learn how to stream movies, scroll through family photos or play simple games.
That ease-of-use makes tablets —and smartphones— popular with busy parents who use them to pacify their kids during car rides, restaurant outings or while they’re at home trying to get dinner on the table. And many feel a little less guilty about it if they think there’s educational value to the apps and games their children use.
