Well, it is always a great time when Marcus Smith is behind a mic and we have the opportunity to talk fitness and more.

Marcus is a legend at Innerfight.com.

Click for the podcast.

As always way more on the talking list but here it is all the same, the notes.

This is our LAST GetFitRadio show as Nightline and GetFitRadio leave the program grid on DubaiEye

50/50/50 recap what was the hardest part for you?

Q. Marcus my daughter is off to college and I really want her to get into a fitness class any tips on not being pushy but getting the hint to her?

Q. MARCUS I was told that I need to walk more and that this is going to be good for me, maybe as good as jogging, thoughts?

https://www.verywellfit.com/are-15-minute-walks-any-good-3435087?utm_campaign=fitsl&utm_medium=email&utm_source=cn_nl&utm_content=13579380&utm_term=
Walking for 15 minutes, four times a day burns as many calories as walking steadily for an hour.
There may be benefits to combining them into one long walk, but you need to weigh that against what you enjoy doing and what fits into your schedule.
The American Heart Association and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control say in their exercise guideline for healthy adults that you should get 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise, such as brisk walking, five days a week, or a total of 150 minutes spread out over the week. To keep off weight, they say you may need to accumulate even more exercise time over a week. But they also say that your exercise time can be broken up into two to three bouts of exercise of 10 to 15 minutes and there is no prescription that it needs to be 30 minutes or more at a time.

Benefits of Walking Over 45 Minutes for Weight Loss

After walking steadily for approximately 45 minutes, your body has burned off the available sugars (glycogen) it has stored up. Now it needs to begin to burn fat.
Walking is a good way to turn the body on to burning stored fat. If you walk for 30 minutes or less, you are still burning calories, but they are the stored sugar calories (glycogen) rather than having to dip into the stored fat.
Q. Marcus, I know you have said this probably a million times and then one but can you tell me what the best all-round exercises are I should be doing as a daily or 4 times a week routine at home using body weight

Q. Worst advice you ever got while in Rugby or training and how did you react.

Q. Marcus , we have had this one before, is it possible to exercise too much?

Q. How do I know if I am working through an injury or working into an injury? How do we really know when to stop and not just be a quitter?

Q. Marcus what has made you stick with Nightline all these years from coming into the show to us doing it at the gym?

Q. Cross-fit and age is there an upper limit?

Q. Do you think when it comes to physical ability most people underestimate their ability?

Q. You and James spoke about your morning stretch routine can you walk us through it.

Q. tips for better sleep?

Q. Loaded cary is it really the best way to improve grip strength?

For most, the loaded carry is an afterthought, but it truly is the best method I know to train grip, core, and work capacity. These three factors have a broader carryover to every other exercise and performance goal than any other. The grip connects us to our environment. The core connects each piece of our body and, with grip strength, allows us to utilize every part of our body in manipulating the environment.
Finally, work capacity stretches our ability to do work longer. It is very important to carry hard to stay healthy. Despite a far less active and physically demanding upbringing, wrist fractures are 50% more common today in our youth than in the 1950’s. Nearly half of all boys and a third of girls will fracture their wrist during childhood. We are missing out if we continue to dismiss and disrespect the loaded carry’s power.

(not a question as much as a statement) Time management an important skill that fitness helps us understand and activate from starting, stopping and knowing when to move on.

Sitting is killing us!

The Current State Of Sitting

People are sitting far more than ever before.
Conservative estimates, taking into account those who are not office workers, puts the average person sitting for around 6 hours per day.
However, there are some who estimate the average person’s time spent sitting at closer to 12 hours per day.
And it makes perfect sense when you break down an average work day for most people in the West.
Average commute times in the US are about 30 minutes each way. Assuming an 8 hour work day, you’re spending 9 hours of your day mostly sat down already.
We can safely add an hour throughout the day sitting down to eat, bringing our total to around 10 hours.
We’re not even including any leisure time, yet, which for many people involves multiple hours of TV or computer activity.
I think it’s plain to see that for most people, it’s only too easy to hit the 12-hour threshold.

Q. Marcus check out Grease the Groove think it is for real?

Q. diets how do I know what to be reating?

-This is a nice piece!
https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/paleo-keto-slow-carb-vegan-how-to-determine-the-perfect-diet-for-you/
#1 – Eat fewer calories than you burn every day.
#2 – Want to also be healthy? Eat mostly real food.
Full stop.
Want to KEEP the weight off?
Add #3: Do those two things consistently for a decade.
This solution will get you like 90% of the way towards a killer physique and a consistently healthy checkup at the doctor.
Mix in the right training and you’ll be 99% of the way there.
The problem is that pesky things like “reality” and “genetics” and “human behavior” keep getting in the way.
It’s why everybody goes on diet after diet after diet, gaining and losing the same 10-50 lbs.

Q. A coach is telling me to build muscle I need to hypertrophy build I don’t get it…

The more volume you do, without exceeding your capacity to recover, the more you grow. Most people are not correctly applying this information and are instead getting inferior results. What is happening is that they make the mistake of doing what is called "waste volume."

Check out the coffee algorithm

Q. What did you have for breakfast today?

Q follow up, Last week we had a back strengthening question this was on the blogfeed

Q. Marcus there are a lot of stretching class things showing up in gyms is this something you are looking at and if not why?

Weight lifting helps the mood

Researchers found 54 effects derived from the 33 trials that demonstrated the positive effect of strength training on depressive symptoms. One primary focus of the study was to determine whether or not factors like amount of exercise, gender, or age influenced the outcome. They determined that the amount of the weights had little to no impact on mental health. Similarly, younger participants experienced the same decrease in symptoms as middle-age and elderly participants.
And in case you're worried about skill level, don't be: The study concluded that more strength did not correlate with less depression, so to speak. All that mattered was showing up and giving it your best.
Q. still working on the double under skips Marcus is there a trick?
Q. Is there an optimum workout duration?
Q. Any thoughts on pre and post workout hydration and the much loved protein powders after or before…
Q. Any thoughts on the cleanliness of gym equipment is a simple wipe down good enough?
Q. how long should it take a heartrate to return to resting after a workout

OK the summer body is still a work in progress so the newsstand at the grocery candy gantulat is full of fixes can they work???

Nice read

Love these!

Here are the notes from the show.

June 20 is the last Nightline broadcast.

11 years of the show is coming to a close as the station reformats the grid and has decided that nightline is not in line with the new direction.  So we have 3 more show.

Crossfit Regionals the updates, highs and lessons!

-training in the summer months, tips and hacks.

Reps, reps, reps Arnie is back in the gym!

Q. Marcus what are your thoughts on buddy training, just partners, instead of a class or alone with a coach? I hear it can really add to the quality of the workout.

Q. Marcus I know you are into running so I wanted to ask about running shoes and longevity, is there a standard pt I should change shoes, 500, 1000km and some people suggest run with multiple shoes one day one one day the other thoughts?

Q. Marcus I was a the gym, sorry not innerfight but I must drop in, and they are talking about weighted stretching is this something new, useful or is it an emerging trend or a fad?

Q. Sirs, I am having upper back pain issues and figure it is hunching and sitting causing it and that I need to strengthen this area, any tips?
1. Grab a weight that’s not too heavy but that provides some resistance. If you’re using two dumbbells, start with 10 to 15 pounds, adjusting as needed. If you’re using a barbell, start with just the barbell (no plates).
2. With your feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent, hinge forward at the hip, keeping your wrists, elbows, and shoulders in a straight line.
3. Maintaining a back flat, pull the barbell (or dumbbells) toward your sternum, stopping slightly below your breast bone. Then, slowly lower the barbell until your arms are straight again. Complete two sets of 10 reps.
1. Lie on your stomach with your arms extended in front of you.
2. Form the letter “I” by lifting your arms off the floor, palms facing inward. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds, and then lower your arms to the ground.
3. Form the letter “Y” by lifting your arms off the ground at a 45-degree angle with thumbs pointing toward the ceiling. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds, and then lower your arms to the ground.
4. Form the letter “T” by lifting your arms off the ground and pushing them back so that they form a 90-degree angle and your palms are facing forward. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds, and then lower your arms to the ground.
5. That’s one rep. Do two sets of 10.
Q. Marcus what do you make of this?

Marcus this is a good article and I think it may be great to talk about the mental strategy to getting moving or getting into the gym as the summer period is another one of those turning points where people start to think about getting active and it is a logical point change.

The natural follow up to this Marcus is staying on track!

Some interesting studies this one on grip strength and the longevity of marriage!
Maybe it is interesting to talk about why grip strength is important in everyday life, traveling with bags for sure and then the funny side of this study.

OK this is cool Squats are good for the brain!
New research on neurological diseases and movement shows that using the legs, particularly in weight-bearing exercise, sends signals to the brain that are vital for the production of healthy neural cells. The groundbreaking study fundamentally alters brain and nervous system medicine -- giving doctors new clues as to why patients with neurological diseases often rapidly decline when their movement becomes limited.
"Our study supports the notion that people who are unable to do load-bearing exercises -- such as patients who are bed-ridden, or even astronauts on extended travel -- not only lose muscle mass, but their body chemistry is altered at the cellular level and even their nervous system is adversely impacted," says Dr. Raffaella Adami from the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy.
The study involved restricting mice from using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of 28 days. The mice continued to eat and groom normally and did not exhibit stress. At the end of the trial, the researchers examined an area of the brain called the sub-ventricular zone, which in many mammals has the role of maintaining nerve cell health. It is also the area where neural stem cells produce new neurons.
Limiting physical activity decreased the number of neural stem cells by 70 percent compared to a control group of mice, which were allowed to roam. Furthermore, both neurons and oligodendrocytes -- specialized cells that support and insulate nerve cells -- didn't fully mature when exercise was severely reduced.

Switching off may be what you need to succeed!

Devices Shape Our Social Interactions the Way Cigarettes Did in the Past

There was a time when you were the odd person out if you didn’t have a cigarette in your hand at a social event. Today, if you don’t have a smartphone you’re a pariah. The same health and cultural aspects that have changed the way everyone perceives smoking may get their equivalent if and when people start to realize the downside of being always on.
However, we also have to acknowledge that technology and change are inevitable. Neither a good or bad thing. Decades ago, television viewing consumed people. Screen time was 8 hours of watching programs that came on at a specific time and you had to be planted firmly in your seat to watch a show or your favorite entertainer or catch the news. Newspapers arrived at a certain point in the day. You had a rhythm to things.
That lack of a rhythm may be the worst thing about modern phone screen viewing habits. Just like your workout planning and your meal planning need their own rhythms so does almost every other aspect of your life. Everybody has their own life rhythm and it’s not always consistent - I love binge watching shows because with the pressure of family I can only allocate a certain time every week to watching something I enjoy. That time may be Monday or Saturday. It’s a small window. Binge watching a show has just made it so much easier for me to make effective use of that leisure time. It’s fully in my control, and I appreciate it.

Take Back Your Time Online so You Can Succeed Offline

So, I have decided that I need to think about creating a new rhythm because chaos is rarely a good strategy for success in anything. It seems counterproductive to work online and put this post up online and ask people to do things offline, but that's the challenge we all face. The things we read and watch on Breaking Muscle should have meaning in the real world and they only have an impact if they are helping you reach your goals. That can only happen if you are focused on the moment, free of distraction.
Using your phone, being online, working on computing devices are utilitarian activities. They are a necessity of sorts. But excess isn't. Neither is being popular online. Neither is feeling connected online. Your relationship with yourself and with your loved ones are only real offline. There is an insidious aspect of the social media culture of always wanting to tell a story to attract Likes; there's rarely any context and there's always more than meets the eye. But the eyes are the only thing getting a workout.
It also seems like we are pushing ourselves to be like some "ideal" that has been popularized on social feeds. It's the tyranny of the masses, a kind of rush to the middle of the bell curve where we don't offend or appear anything but acceptable to as wide a group of people as possible.
Everyone is different. Everyone has stuff to deal with that sucks. Everyone can't look like a model wannabe. Your only goals in life should be to find health and happiness. It's that simple, and it doesn't have anything to do with what anyone else thinks or does. It's just you in the real world.

Recovering From Elbow Injury

  1. Always begin with RICE.
  2. Move to range of motion exercises, regaining flexion and extension as needed.
  3. Incorporate exercises that will help build strength and stability to the joint.
If ever in doubt about the injury, check with your physician. Activity should last a lifetime. Better to take care of something early than wait until it becomes a problem. Injuries are a part of life; how the injury is handled, determines how well a successful recovery will occur.
Some interesting talk about why to not use Canola oil!

Treadmill vs outdoor running, I may be headed indoors so the question is what are the tradeoffs beyond the obvious?
