Doctalk January 6, 2015

This is the show where I can trot out all the aches and pains and talk to the doctors for an hour about them! Well as a rule we get a handful of SMS messages and callers and we talk about them but I try!

The doctors join me for simply great conversation.

Interesting article on Cancer.

Like most weeks we get sidelined by the SMS messages. And these are useful to follow along with as you listen to the podcast to come later in this post.

Mark asks, too late to get flu shot? Thanks. Great show

Does a Flu vaccine really help. I get a throat infection 3 yearly and always take zinnat. I tried many times to avoid antibiotic didn't work.  Thanks Saleh

Hi! Oops!  cabin crew Sick leave rate is high! Cheers anna

I take a teaspoon of high quality authentic honey (from Yemen or Manuke from Asia Pacific) and my flu rate went down from 5 times a year to once a year on average.

Not sure if you can help but I have 3 problems 1. A dentist told me I have a tumour and an abscess in my mouth? Where can I got for a second opinion ? 2. I've put my back out I'm overweight so this could be the reason again where can I go? 3. I have been really down of late is there anyone you can suggest . Anthony

Hi. Great show. I normally get red spots down my legs after a sore throat. This is usually followed by blood in my urine. I have been told by doctors that that is just vasculitis and that it will heal on its own. After 4 months of visits to the doctors I am still confused. Need advice? Syed Ali.

Honey is one of things mentioned in the Holy Quran which provides cure and health

You can tell if Honey has sugar mixed in after leaving it out for a few days. I shared the text earlier about the honey. I forgot to mention my name. Imad.

I've read that you must eat honey made by bees from local plants if you have a cold. Cheers Gavin

Great programming James! S Jodha

TechTalk January 5

Techtalk is broadcast on the radio and internet every Monday at 10pm and is a great hour of consumer discovery and techno simplicity.

Some say that I live in the ideal world, I get to play with the latest tech and then give it back to go and buy the stuff that is awesome instead of buying stuff and then regretting it!

Well, Andrew Thomas and I sit down once a week and we run through some product reviews and news from the tech world.

This week was a catch up after the holidays and as usual we didn't get through 3/4 of the stuff on our list of must chat about.

Here is the podcast.

What you really want to take a look at are the show notes because everything we speak about is there!

At the start of the show I said we would get to CES, we didn't!

But next week is all CES so tune in.

Ouch that is a lot of money.  Nearly half a billion in funding for snapchat

Remember this Marriott story? Now they are sort of asking to block your reception in conference spaces!

But for a good reason?

The question at hand is what measures a network operator can take to detect and contain rogue and imposter Wi-Fi hotspots used in our meeting and conference spaces that pose a security threat to meeting or conference attendees or cause interference to the conference guest wireless network.
Security experts do believe that hackers are using deceptively named Wi-Fi networks to trick hotel guests into logging on and exposing their computers to danger. It's not clear what that problem—which should mostly be addressed by educating people about not connecting to unknown Wi-Fi networks—has to do with people using personal Wi-Fi hotspots.

Palm might be back?

Here’s a surprise just in time for New Year’s: Palm, the erstwhile mobile brand that flopped despite the big potential of its platform, may still have some life left in it yet.
For years, the HP-owned company sent Palm.com visitors to the HPWebOS.com website. Now Palm redirects to MyNewPalm.com, which features a Palm logo and the alternating messages “Coming Soon” and "Smart Move.”

TRA Reveals Data for Third Quarter of 2014 on UAE Market Shares of Mobile Handsets, Smartphones and Social Networking Sites
The iPhone 5s continues to be the most commonly used mobile handset in the UAE, followed by the Nokia 105/1050 with both Samsung and Apple recording an increase in their market shares.

According to the report, during the period between 1 July 2013 and 30 September 2014, 59% of handsets registered on the UAE’s networks were Smartphones, a figure that has been constantly increasing overtime. In terms of Smartphone models, the iPhone 5s was the most commonly used Smartphone in the UAE comprising 3.7% of total handsets registered on UAE networks, a figure that increased by 22% during Q2 2014 and by 6% in Q3 2014. The report illustrates that the iPhone 5 was the second most popular Smartphone with 2.5% of the market share. The third most commonly used Smartphone was the Samsung S III (2.4%), followed by iPhone 4S (1.7%), Samsung S4 LTE (1.7%), Galaxy S Duos (1.5%), iPhone 4 (1.4%), Samsung Note 3 (1.2%),BlackBerry Bold 9900 (1.2%) ; Samsung S5 (0.7%).

Montblanc the estrap makes any watch a smart watch !
Cool?
The e-strap module attaches on the wrist side of the strap and is composed of DLC (diamond like carbon) coated steel. Most of the device is taken up by the 0.9-inch monochromatic OLED touchscreen. It has a resolution of 128×36, which works out to 147 pixels per inch. It will show calls, texts, email, appointments, and other basic content. Users will also get some fitness tracking features with the built-in pedometer and have the ability to control music playback. This is nothing ground-breaking, but it’s more than you’ll get with other mechanical watches.
Montblanc will ask €250 ($300) for the e-strap attachment separately, but buyers will be able to get one included with the Timewalker series. The cheapest Timewalker Urban watch will run €2,990 ($3,588) with e-strap and the most expensive one will cost €4,690 ($5,628). At that point, dropping another couple hundred isn’t a big deal.

Very cool how art in the collections around the world can be brought online!

The Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery have an amazing gift for the world in 2015: a newly available collection of 40,000 digitized Asian and American artworks. The Smithsonian says its vast collection has mostly never been seen by the public, and the institution is making the collection available for free public use. The art dates from the Neolithic period to present day; the Smithsonian says the collection includes "1,806 American art objects, 1,176 ancient Egyptian objects, 2,076 ancient Near Eastern objects, 10,424 Chinese objects, 2,683 Islamic objects, 1,213 South and Southeast Asian objects, and smaller groupings of Korean, Armenian, Byzantine, Greek and Roman works."

CarTalk January 5th

Who doesn't like to talk about their dream car or that awful car you are driving that you would not wish upon an enemy?

Well, every Monday at 9pm James and the guys from Motoring Middle East sit down and chat about the rolling art on the road today.

And there is a lot of rolling junk also, oh and a few things nobody can understand why they are even in existence.

Here is the podcast of this weeks show.

Here are some of the SMS questions that came into the show that provoked even more conversation.

I drive an X5 (new shape) 35i exclusive. Fantastic interior, covers all my needs and then some (head up display, amazing screen, easy nav, very comfortable, great space for the kids in the back and boot). Regarding your Bentley, I have to admit that the Rolls Royce Ghost is just the ultimate - beats the molzane. The RR I drove had two tone silver blue and the perfection on the inside combined with the best drive of my life. Just incredible attention to detail and perfection. Nothing like the RR in the world.

How does it feel knowing your kids will be completing your Bentley's payments in 20 years? :p

Scirocco R vs. Golf R?
Lasto

Burmester sound system.  Google

Burmester is the stereo in the Mercedes, found in Porsches first. A stand alone Burmester stereo cost more than a new Cayenne.  -Martin

I drive a corvette Z06..no fancy options, but once you remember what's  under  the hood you wake up the child inside you...

Whats your take on the new cadillac escalade? I like its straight edgy looks,  but how does it stack against its peers
Ben

Also, one main mechanical difference between the Sirocco and Golf R, Sirroco is FWD and Golf is AWD
Shijil

What do you think of the nrw

It does look old! Specially compared with the Scirocco and how it won many design awards for amazing hothatches!

Here is what we set out to speak about.

  1. what are you driving

2. what to expect in the new year?
