Google, whose executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, said in November that he was outraged over the practice, didn't mention the NSA in Thursday's announcement, except in a veiled reference to "last summer's revelations." The change affects more than 425 million users of Google's Gmail service.
Yahoo has promised similar steps for its email service by this spring.

This is cool really!
The concept works using data from Instagram and Foursquare to provide real-time updates. Major networks Facebook and Twitter aren't included in the service (Twitter is ‘too vague', according to the company), but the makers hope to add more social networks in the future.
"Cloak scrapes Instagram and Foursquare to let you know where all your friends, "friends," and nonfriends are at all times so you never have to run into that special someone," claims the app.
Cloak is the latest app in the ‘anti-social network' trend, in which online users are increasingly valuing privacy over publicizing their every move.

Sensing an opportunity, the 2014 TED Fellow—along with a few colleagues—built the just-launchedMolecular Flipbook. It seeks to fundamentally change the way biochemists can model their research and share their renderings, while also creating a library of shareable assets to help increase more speed and flexibility into the process. For example, one researcher may be working on an interaction between two proteins, while another may be working on something similar, but instead of having to start from scratch they may be able to add their third protein to the rendering of the existing pair. Iwasa says this more rapid prototyping of experiments or theories helps facilitate discussion around the researcher's hypotheses—and does it much faster.
5. Mobile Mobile Mobile
Mobile devices will account for 50% of Google paid-search clicks by December 2015, according to Marin Software. The company predicts in a report released Wednesday that mobile will become the primary channel for search as investment in these devices increases, surpassing 42% this year.

Bankrupt Japanese firm MtGox said in a filing that it has found 200,000 lost bitcoins.
The firm said it found the bitcoins - worth around $116m (£70m) - in an old digital wallet from 2011.
That brings the total number of bitcoins the firm lost down to 650,000 from 850,000.
MtGox, formerly the world's largest bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy in February, after it said it lost thousands of bitcoins to hackers.
"MtGox had certain old-format wallets which were used in the past and which, MtGox thought, no longer held any bitcoins," said Mt Gox chief executive Mark Karpeles in the filing.
7. Hooray flappy birds is back!
Addictive mobile game Flappy Bird will return to Apple's app store, creator Dong Nguyen has confirmed - although he declined to give a specific date.
On Twitter, a fan had asked if he was going to put the game back in the app store.
"Yes. But not soon," Mr Nguyen replied, later adding: "I don't work by plan. I will release it when it is done."
Mr Nguyen removed the popular game in February, saying its popularity had ruined his "simple life".

Pebble is definitely proving the smartwatch market is growing. The company sold 400,000 devices last year, snagging somewhere around $60 million in revenue.
And in 2014, the company is well on track to double that revenue number.

10, What is this programming language? Oh Google is at it! Slow but sure.
By some measures, Google's Go programming language is a non-factor in development. Google Trends, which measures general interest in a search term,hardly registers a blip for Go compared to more established programming languages like Java, C++ and JavaScript.
But this doesn't tell the whole story. While it's basically impossible to figure out thenumber of jobs requiring Go skills, due to its generic name, there are a number of sources (see here, here and here) that suggest Go is gaining momentum as an important programming language for employers.
The best leading indicator of Go adoption, however, is its rise in open source development.
According to Redmonk analyst Donnie Berkholz's analysis of Ohloh, which tracks 600,000 open source projects, Go adoption is real and growing:

11. iTunes store for android oh that is getting interesting!
Apple's iTunes store may still be one of the most popular sources for downloading cheap music, but you need an iOS device to take advantage, and that leaves a heck of a lot of smartphone owners out in the cold. Rather than have those users hand over heaps of cash to competitors, it makes sense for Apple to bring its iTunes store to Android. And according to Billboard, that's exactly what Cupertino may be considering.
