Family day unplugged!
While reading this story, you probably won't be interacting with your family.
Over time, surfing the web and constantly staying connected could make you more distant with your loved ones.
At least that's the concern behind "Family Day Unplugged," a program started by the Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA).
Canadians consume a huge amount of media each day — up 8.2 hours, according to one recent report. Another study suggests teens spend even more time with media, at nine hours a day.
But "Family Day Unplugged" is looking to help buck those trends this holiday Monday.
The program is encouraging communities throughout Alberta to unplug from their devices and instead spend time focused on their family. Many recreational events are being hosted throughout the province under the program's banner, including sledding, swimming, skating, board games and campfires.
Kim Williston, director of the FCSSAA branch in Beaumont, Alta., said the program was launched in response to a disconcerting trend.
"We're seeing that, in our communities, people are more disconnected," she said. "We're seeing people are busy, they're disconnected, they're not interacting with their neighbours."
New iPhone and iPad in March!
Apple, which will introduce a new 4-inch iPhone, dubbed the “iPhone 5se”, and a new iPad Air at a launch event, is unlikely to take pre-orders for the new devices, the blog reported.
The technology giant has hit a trough in iPhone demand. The 0.4 per cent rise in shipments in the fiscal first quarter was the slowest-ever increase in iPhone sales since the phone was launched in 2007.
The new 4-inch iPhone 5se is designed to spur iPhone hardware upgrades for customer seeking faster devices without upgrading to the far larger iPhone 6s and 6s Plus screen sizes.
Apple could not be immediately reached for comment.
Someone might want to buy Yahoo!
Verizon is looking to make its go90 video-streaming service a source of new sales and profit. Yahoo, with more than one billion people using its e-mail, finance, sports and video sites, represents a prized asset to combine with AOL’s two million users and Verizon’s more than 112 million wireless subscribers. That kind of Web traffic, along with exclusive content, is just what Verizon needs to secure a foothold in video-advertising against YouTube and Facebook serving a mobile phone-addicted generation. Yahoo and Verizon declined to comment.
Mr. Armstrong’s outreach picks up on conversations he had in 2014 with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, according to another person familiar with the situation. This was a year before Verizon acquired AOL and when Mr. Armstrong was exploring a deal to combine the two former Web portal giants. He has known Ms. Mayer for years. Both were executives at Google before they left to head up their respective Web companies.
Mr. Armstrong helped with Verizon’s $250-million (U.S.) purchase of advertising-technology specialist Millennial Media Inc. in October. AOL, while it was still independent, had already begun talks with that company. With the blessing of Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam, Mr. Armstrong runs AOL as a semi-autonomous media and advertising business. A former U.S. sales chief for Google, Mr. Armstrong serves as a talent scout and dealmaker, helping Verizon develop its mobile-video business to compete with Google and Facebook Inc.
For the better part of a decade, Yahoo has struggled through leadership changes, failures to gain a foothold in rising trends such as mobile, an inability to dispose of valuable stakes in Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Yahoo Japan Corp. without heavy tax costs and now faces calls for an outright sale by activist shareholder Starboard Value LP.
Mr. McAdam has taken a patient stance with Yahoo. Yahoo’s board has been “very deliberately and very logically” sorting out its plan, Mr. McAdam said on CNBC’s Mad Money. “At the right price, I think marrying up some of their assets with AOL under Tim Armstrong’s leadership would be a good thing for investors.”

New Twitter Algorithm.
“Twitter went into an uproar Friday after a BuzzFeed report that the social network was on the brink introducing an algorithmic, more Facebook-style feed….Spend an entire day away from Twitter, and when you open the app again, you’ll see highlights from the day. If you open it up a few times a day, you’ll see a handful of “while you were away”-style sections breaking up the chronological tweets.” — The Verge, “Here’s how Twitter’s new algorithmic timeline is going to work”
Self Parking chairs sort of! Nissan! a stunt but cool idea
While motorized human transporters have yet to truly take off, the folks over at Nissan have come up with something more practical for the time being: self-parking office chairs. With a single clap, these futuristic furniture will automagically tuck themselves back into their rightful positions, thus keeping your office or meeting room neat and tidy. And of course, it's also fun to watch, as you can see in the video after the break. Nissan says these modified Okamura chairs are actually tracked by four motion cameras on the walls, and then they are simultaneously controlled via Wi-Fi.
Samsung moving into smart shoes!
If you're still wearing plain old sneakers, Samsung wants to put a stop to that. The company is about to launch a new brand of smart athletic shoes called IoFIT from its in-house startup, Salted Venture. The shoe comes with numerous pressure sensors that measure your posture, balance and weight distribution. An app then crunches the data to help you improve your athletic performance in sports like weightlifting, golf and running. "There's so much valuable information coming from our feet, and it's being wasted," says Salted Venture CEO Jacob Cho.

A whole new spin on virtual reality!
Immersit offers a novel method of augmenting the virtual experience. By adding small feet to the bottom of your chair or couch, the device can physically move your entire seated body to better reflect the action playing out on screen. In a demo shown at CES, the company used a chair and a VR race track demo to show of its technology. The chair bucked and tilted to simulate the track and the effects of G-forces as the car speed around the raceway. The company just launched a Kickstarter campaign for the vibrating sofa.
Work at Google!
Available jobs include engineering positions related to motion control, displays, robotics, and sensors, and there are also managerial positions up for grabs, which would focus on operations, materials, and marketing. For a bit more context, a job post for a manufacturing process engineer notes that the individual would be responsible for “designing factory assembly stations, optimizing production floor layout, automating critical manufacturing processes and approving fixture designs used in the assembly of electronic modules for the self-driving car.”
On the other hand, whoever lands the manufacturing supplier quality engineer gig will have to create and approve “manufacturing inspection processes, equipment, tools gauges and fixtures for raw material, mechanical components and mechanical assemblies.” Sounds like serious stuff.
Goodbye Picasa
Google is retiring Picasa in order to entirely focus on Google Photos. Picasa started life outside Google in 2002, allowing users to organize and edit their photos before sharing them online. Google acquired Picasa in 2004, and it rapidly grew into a very popular application.
In 2015 Google launched Google Photos, a standalone service spun out of Google+. This was seen as the natural successor to Picasa, and that’s exactly how things have played out. The Picasa desktop app will die on March 15th, with Picasa Web Albums following suit on May 1st.
Thankfully, transitioning from Picasa to Google Photos is as easy as logging into the latter, as all photos and videos have already been moved across. However, practicality doesn’t always trump nostalgia, and we’re sure there will be people mourning the end of Picasa even though there’s a ready-made replacement in the form of Google Photos.
