CarTalk March 5 & 12

There is never a dull moment in the Nightline studio when the CarTalk team is parked and ready get things heated up a bit.

In this post we have not only this week's show but also last week's show, don't ask.

March 12th's show, that show will be posted 1st, saw a special guest in the studio Gary West the head of Future Mobility for GM Middle East.

We got to talk electric vehicles.

The car in question was the BOLT! And for the record it was a very sweet ride.

The talk as you might suspect was pretty positive, even with Shazahd trying to poke a few holes in the electric car conversation.

Give the show a listen.

And here is the link to the previous week where we, as usual had a merry conversation about what is hot and not on the road.

Here are the show notes for the 5th and the 12th.

Gary D. West
Head of Future Mobility, GM Middle East
Gary D. West is responsible for the strategic planning and
implementation of GM’s Future Mobility technologies in the Middle
East, in line with the company’s vision of zero crashes, zero emissions
and zero congestion.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV can achieve more than 500 kilometres* of range on a single
charge, with the ability to store 150 kilometres worth of range in just a 30-minute
charge.
  • 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
  • 288 lithium ion cells
    • Five sections
    • 10 modules
    • 96 cell groups – three cells per group
  • 960 lbs. (435 kg) total weight
GM says that the pack uses active thermal conditioning which is “similar” to the 2016 Chevrolet Volt.  Still, a 8-year/100,000 mile warranty should take care of any issues owners might come across

Consumer report ranking!

During this year’s Geneva motor show, Volkswagen’s CEO, Dr. Herbert Diess, announced that “Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand” while talking about the convertible version of its newest compact crossover -- the T-Roc. While that’s good news for folks who want something akin to a smaller Nissan Murano Crosscabriolet, it became bad news for Beetle fans. According to a conversation R&D boss Frank Welsch had with Autocar, the Beetle won’t see a successor.
Welsch told Autocar the reason for not building a Beetle successor is “made with history in mind; you can't do it five times and have a new new new Beetle.” For those who forgot, the Beetle was revived in 1997 and was dubbed the New Beetle in 2011.

Range Rover gave us a look at the inside of its exclusive SV Coupe ahead of its 2018 Geneva motor show debut. Now that the covers are off, we can behold its exterior, and it's still a bit of a brain-bender. With big doors and big rear flanks behind them, it looks at first glance more like a digital rendering than the sort of thing that will be rolling around certain very wealthy (and no doubt very well-paved) enclaves.
But it is real, and it isn't just a cobbled-together job patched up with lead filler. It gets almost entirely unique sheetmetal, with only the hood and lower tailgate carrying over from the four-door.
Land Rover calls this “the world’s first full-size luxury SUV coupe,” and it may well be correct in that. There is historical precedent for this limited-edition offering, though; the first Range Rovers were offered with two doors (or three doors, depending on what you consider the rear hatch) from the very start. You couldn’t even get an officially produced four-door Rangie until 1981. Earlier four-doors were actually conversions produced by coachbuilders, including Switzerland’s enigmatic Monteverdi.

Thing is, two-door Range Rovers were discontinued in 1994, after the rugged SUVs started gaining interior niceties but before they completed their transformation into full-on terrain-crushing luxury cruisers. So if they want to say this is the first of its breed, we’ll give it to 'em.

SEAT why are we not seeing more of these guys here?

The Spanish, Volkswagen-owned carmaker Seat has now announced its Cupra e-Racer, which will be formally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The manufacturer calls it the world's "first 100 percent electric racing touring car", which it might well be. The car, based on the Cupra Leon TCR touring car, will serve to start off a new E TCR category.

The power output is notable, as the Cupra e-Racer can deliver 300kW (~400 hp) of continuous power, with peak power of 500 kW or 670 hp. The racing car will probably function as a halo car of sorts for the newly spun-off Cupra brand, that will serve as Seat's sportive arm. Cupra will also take over Seat's entire motorsport and racing division, which was earlier under the Seat Sport moniker. Seat's tweet speaks much of their intentions for the Cupra brand as well as the e-Racer:

Hyundai is getting more serious!
https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/02/hyundai-poaches-third-bmw-executive/
Hyundai has poached a third executive for its N high-performance division from the ranks of BMW's M department. Thomas Schemera, a 31-year BMW veteran, will head the High Performance Vehicle & Motorsport Division that Hyundai just inaugurated on March 1. Schemera's job will be to "oversee strategy, product planning, sales and marketing for the new division." He will make the most of the transfer from Hyundai Motorsport to the road cars developed by the N division, and work to boost the brand.

What the Mazda rotary engine is back?

It seems that a range-extended Mazda electric car with a rotary engine is for real, and coming sooner than expected. An automotive news outlet from the Netherlands called AutoRAI spoke with Mazda's European vice president for sales and customer service. He told the outlet that Mazda has an electric car coming In 2019, and it will be available with a rotary engine as a generator.

Saw one today NICE
