From the Ford F-150 Raptor and Chevrolet Silverado Z71 to the Toyota Tacoma TRD Proand Ram 1500 Rebel, there is a wealth of factory trucks available for off-road enthusiasts. The market for performance street trucks, though, is almost nonexistent, seeing how Ford didn’t continue its small-batch F-150 Tremor. The best place for those shoppers to turn isRoush Performance and its new F-150 SC package, which takes America’s best-selling pickup and transforms it into a tire-scorching hauler.
Roush starts with the 2016 Ford F-150’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine and bolts on an R2300 supercharger, a new air intake, a reflashed engine computer, and a side-exit exhaust, bumping output up to 600 hp and 557 lb-ft of torque. No internal engine modifications were needed for the V-8 to support an extra 215 hp, according to Roush, and the supercharger design is mostly carried over from the company’s Mustang applications.
The off-road-focused Mickey Thompson Baja tires are easy to light up and smoke. The F-150 SC won’t snap your head back like a 600-hp sports car would, but Roush’s truck is seriously fast; a rush of torque arrives as soon as you dip into the throttle. Ford’s six-speed automatic transmission is recalcitrant to downshift, the supercharger’s whine is always slightly muffled by the exhaust grumble, and the Fox Racing coil-over suspension raises the truck a little but doesn’t noticeably compromise its ride. The Roush looks right, what with 20-inch black wheels, fender flares, new front fascia parts, and an assortment of Roush decals and graphics. There’s also a decal of Jack Roush’s signature on the tailgate and a serialized plaque in the center console to commemorate the truck’s place in the production cycle.
