CarClinic March 6 and 13, 2018

We think that the one thing we all share in common as humans is the desire to find an efficient mode of transport that does not use our own locomotion. Once we have found the way to get around that does not mean we have to do the physical work we spend our time and money keeping that transportation working.

Glenn joins the show each week from GT Auto Centre in Dubai to help you keep your car on the road.

There are always a healthy supply of questions to the show.

The March 13th show.

The March 6th show.

Here are the basic questions that fueled the show.

What are you seeing in the workshop this week?

Hi James/Glen,
I was back home in the Philippines in January and purchased a new Ford Ranger.
Before returning to Dubai the end of January I covered the vehicle with a heavy duty two piece cover that zips together to fully encloses it, vehicle is parked very close to the sea.
I will be returning to Philippines early May, is it ok for the car to be stored for this period of time without being started or driven? I could arrange for the vehicle to be started and idling for a time but having the vehicle to be driven would be a problem.
Hopefully you will be able to answer my query in this weeks show or if not would be pleased to receive an e-mail response.
Many thanks.
Regards
Keith

hi guys. great show. I am considering buying a jeep cherokee trailhawk 2015. I am concerned abt the transmission in that model. I hears it fails many times and there were many recalls in US. is it a concern still with the car? you recommend I go through with it?  thanks
Ashraf.

-squeaky fan belt does that mean it is going the belt ot the fan motor or both?
-Temp meter in the car rises at a stop goes to normal when driving what might be happening?
-brakes squeak at low speeds any ideas?
-how often rotate, balance and check tire pressure?
-nitro v air?

-How do I decide between an battery that needs servicing and a service free battery

-Door handle on my Yaris has broken off is that an easy fix, can I do it myself?

-Mechanic says my head gasket is done what is this and is it an immediate repair?

-when I am in a mall I hear a sound like stones in a hub cap but I have no hubcaps any idea what might be making that clancking noise?

-How often should the AC gas be replaced, does it wear out?

-Do we still have to ensure the gap for spark plugs or are they preset?

-HELP! I recently had my shocks and struts replaced. The control arms were also replaced. Ever since then I have had a high pitch squeaking sound coming from under the car.

-We drove a 2012 Camry for 5 months with it shifting hard (a light jerk, not smooth). We took it to a very reputable shop the end of Nov. that also specializes in transmissions and was told the transmission was shot and needed replaced ASAP. They said there were metal fragments in the transmission fluid. I told them to just fish the transmission to try to get us by for a while. When we got the car back it still shifted rough for a couple weeks and then that went away and it drives fine now. We have driven it over 4,000 miles with no issues. We have never had any warning lights. This was the first transmission flush, could it have fixed the issue? I don't want to replace a transmission that may still have many more miles on it. How can we find out for sure if we need a transmission? Could it go out at any time without warning?

CarClinic February 20, 2018

There is no question that one of the few things that we all own or strive to own is a car.

Once we own a car we are part of the club that invests, sometimes, huge amounts of money to keep those cars running.

Well, Glenn Power joins the show from GT Auto Centre to offer no nonsense advice on car repair and maintenance.

If we could drive a car into the studio we would!

This week we had some great questions about brakes and turbos.

And of course we had all those great questions about things you are not sure about in the middle.

As always a great show to learn about auto maintenance.

The CarClinic January 16, 2018

How often have you heard your car making a crazy odd sound but you have nobody to talk to about it, mostly because you do not want to sound stupid asking the question.

And let's face it our friends our friends are great sources of information but they can also be pretty judgmental.

I have an answer for you, the CarClinic with Glenn from GT Auto Centre.

Every week, Glenn and I sit down in the studio and turn it into a car workshop.

This week was interesting because we had a message about a car that was at the end of its warranty, developed a problem just at the end of the period and because the owner missed several services the warranty was voided.

We also had a good chat about spending the 500dhs or so to have a car you may be interested in inspected by an independent workshop.

One thing is for sure when I get to sit down with Glenn you can never be too sure what you will learn and it is always a lot of fun.

Want to take a look at the show notes?

The CVT gearbox question was nice!

Tell us about the Rolls and the oil level gauges, a lot like the new cars today!

And let the questions begin.

  1. I asked this question last week and never got an answer

I have a 2008 s500 mercedes benz, 90000 km driven only,  my AC is acting funny, whenever i turn the car on the AC is steaming hot for at least two minutes, then it goes back to normal. What do u think is the  problem and how can i fix it.

2. Why does the lexus CT-H have such low power, I think 98 bhp. Is bhp supposed to be taken differently for hybrids?

3. What is a CVT gearbox and are there reasons to not want a car with one?

4. What should I be on guard about if I want to have underbody lighting installed?

5. Oil additives when I get the oil on the car changed do we need it?

6. Can a silencer be bought that is real from other than the dealer like is there a Speedy Muffler King in the UAE?

7. How hard is it to fix peeling clearcoat (me)

8. Service or non service battery which is better?

9. How often should the air filter be replaced and not just blown out, how do we know the air filter is finished?

Here are the show notes.

My Mercedes C200 2014 started making V8 type growling noise every time i accelerate normally and a lot more if I really press on it.
Earlier this noise would only happen if I switched to sport mode and manual modes.
Now it seems the sound just keeps increasing over the pass few months.
Pls help

Also I feel that my Mercedes doesn’t really down shift as much as it should and hence when it’s on 6th gear in auto and I break and slow down then the engine makes that hauling noise typical when you are at low speed at high gear.

Please advise

Q.How often should the tire balance be checked

Q. Can an air suspension easily be converted to traditional?

Q. I am seeing 5w40 20w50 and other oils what do the 2 sets of numbers and letter mean?

Q. I drive a 2010 Ford Explorer with 90,000 Km on the clock. It runs great. However, when I changed the oil I found coolant in it--yet the coolant level is full.
What is going on?

Q. I accidentally poured some windshield-washer fluid into the radiator. My coolant mix is two-thirds water, so will the washer fluid hurt the radiator? Or should the radiator be drained and filled with new coolant?

If fixing your car is maybe the most daunting task you can think of wrapping your mind around then this is the program you NEED to be listening to.

Glenn Power from GT Auto Centre in Dubai is in the studio and this man knows a thing or 2 about automotive repair.

And this week we have a special guest.

Fahed Shahed   The Mechanic Chip Tuning Instagram/facebook/google
05 mechanic

So, we kicked off the show with a chat abut retuning the computer of your car and finished talking about a funny noise in the back of the car.

Not a dull moment on this show.

The Notes.

A full engine remap alters the fuel, boost and torque characteristics of the engine. By controlling the fuel pressure, injected fuel quantity, maximum permissible visible smoke limit, boost pressure from the turbocharger and the torque characteristic.

The Mechanic offers a fully controllable change to the engine characteristics, whilst still operating with full engine feedback control and within all the preset engine sensor limits.

The method in which we perform the remap engine tuning upgrade will remain undetectable by the dealer from your standard diagnostic scan & service.

Of course if your dealer was to compare actual telemetry/settings then they could in theory detect a difference in the file.

Under normal scrutiny and down to the way we install/write/develop our files we go as far as possible to keep the remap invisible!

-I hear a rattle in the back of the car after about 40 minutes of driving and I cannot figure out where it is coming from, any idea if it is the tires, axel????

-How often do we need to change the spark plugs my garage does them every service

-Is there a car you see that tends to not come in for repairs just the regular service would love to know

-When I turn hard left the car screeches is that a belt or something I need to be more worried about

-Oil conditioning additives do we need that when we get an oil change?
