CarClinic February 20, 2018

There is no question that one of the few things that we all own or strive to own is a car.

Once we own a car we are part of the club that invests, sometimes, huge amounts of money to keep those cars running.

Well, Glenn Power joins the show from GT Auto Centre to offer no nonsense advice on car repair and maintenance.

If we could drive a car into the studio we would!

This week we had some great questions about brakes and turbos.

And of course we had all those great questions about things you are not sure about in the middle.

As always a great show to learn about auto maintenance.

Click for the podcast.

And here are the notes to follow along!

@glennthatcarguy

Any idea if we will get the new Miata? I've been waiting for so long but no news from dealer. Found a used Boxter S with manual trans at a very good price. What do you think?

84000 for a new Pajero!

Mercedes-Benz was the world’s best-selling luxury car brand for the third consecutive month in September, surpassing BMW and Audi as demand for coupelike SUVs helped its sales grow twice as fast as at either competitor.
Deliveries at the Daimler AG luxury unit rose 16 percent to 188,400 cars last month, compared with 180,500 BMW-brand autos and 170,900 at Audi. A bevy of SUVs, including the new GLC and GLE and the GLA, have put the Mercedes brand on course to outsell Audi for the first time since 2010, said Tim Urquhart, a London-based analyst for IHS Automotive.

The Consumerism Call-in September 29, 2015

Every week on Nightline we open up the phone lines for a conversation on an issue.

This week we were asking if you feel that you are a victim of consumerism?

Do we need the new car? New iphone? new pant suit (who wears a pant suit)?

We want to get people to call in and share how they bought because they felt they had to not because they wanted to.

Is out of control consumerism inevitable or can we stop it?

The Podcast!

Here is a look at what some of the the listeners had to say over the SMS.

Consumerism is an evil parallel religion in its own right that one should fight.
Fadi

Need means greed nowadays Trish :-)

Hi james. Yes its very tempting to get the latest jeep, ive often looked at the wrangler, but i have to say my '95 xj cherokee has become far too good to sell! Unbeatable off road, and it has taken a beating! B rgds ian (the skoda guy) ;-)

We can always get another  grandma from Carrefour...

It's simple. If what you've got is working, don't change it. My 2005 Pajero have done 320000 Km and it still drives so well!!!

Perhaps electronics and white goods manufacturers could be forced to better produce and better distribute economically priced spare parts in order to encourage repairing in place of throwing away.  (Tim Holmes in Ajman)

Satisficing (satisfaction + sacrifice) example. Cost of Good 800mm camera lens is $1,000. Next level quality is for $18,000. Do we need to spend 17k forlittle better picture?

Friend of mine has this self correction thing. If he likes something, he takes a look and then sleeps on it for a week; if he cannot stop thinking about, might as well get it otherwise he's forgotten about it - Saad Zafar

I must admit I have a bit of a tech addiction. Recently the only thing which has been keeping me from getting the latest and greatest is that I have forced some sanity into myself. Plus, I dont like where Samsung has taken their phones anyway -Erik

he problem is ads push us to buy items on sale at half price which we don't want to throw away import item at home ultimately doubling our expense

Dr James,
Always good to listen to you. The problem is much greater. Not only wastage of resources and money, the disappointing quality deterioration ofa range of products bought here should be discussed !!! And counterfeit products a big challenge in this environment of high pressure to purchase
Berhanu

And here are the show notes!

Apple today announced that opening weekend sales for the brand-new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have exceeded thirteen million units, breaking the previous record of ten million units sold by the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last year.

http://www.salon.com/2014/11/02/fast_cheap_and_out_of_control_how_hyper_consumerism_drives_us_mad/

Think of it: 48,800 items in the average American supermarket, 500 or more stations on satellite TV, 125 beverage options in a single Coke machine, 65 different styles with 140 color and fabric options—a total of 9,100 options from a single dress company, a new Nook with 700,000 Google apps. Does this endless proliferation of consumer products really give people more choices or just different variations of the same options? Is it really true that more choices are always better?
Modernization’s strategy of planned obsolescence, entrepreneurs’ insistence on incessant innovation, and modernism’s dedication to making it new intersect in the world of contemporary fashion to expose the irrationality and inefficiency of today’s markets. Modernism, we have seen, is defined by its thoroughgoing commitment to the new or, more precisely, to an endless process of renewal.

The American clothing industry today is a $12 billion business and the average American family spends $1,700 on clothes. Cline observes, “Nowadays, an annual budget of $1700 can buy a staggering surfeit of clothing, including 485 ‘Fab Scoopneck’ tops from Forever 21 or 340 pairs of ladies’ sandals from Family Dollar or 163 pairs of seersucker Capri pants from Goody’s or 56 pairs of Mossimo ‘Skinny Utility’ cargo pants from Target or 47 pairs of glitter platform wedges from Charlotte Russe or 11 men’s Dockers suits from JCPenney or 6 Lauren by Ralph Lauren sequin evening gowns.” In much of Europe, where fast fashion started, the situation is even crazier. In an article entitled “Britain’s Bulging Closet: Growth of ‘Fast Fashion’ Means Women Are Buying HALF Their Body Weight in Clothes Each Year,” Paul Sims reports that the average woman in England has twenty-two garments hanging in her closet that she has never worn and will spend on average $201,000 on clothing during her lifetime.

REVIEW

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

du 2799dhs

In one word “Sweet”

-look I love the notes and have been rocking a Note 2 forever!
-The Note5 is elegant in its form factor with a beautiful polished case.
-Surprisingly chunkier than the Note2 but it has presence that as I said is elegant, nice lines

SPen- this is the Note feature that is still the game changer. Now there the Spen is spring loaded and there is an audio and vibration cue when it is activated.

Running 5.1.1

Love the little things like the way the screen goes to black when you power down, moving to black from left to right!

The screen image is absolutely crystal clear!

Wireless charging! 2 hours to full charge

5.7 inch screen

Video stabalizer

Livestream capability to Youtube

4K UHD video!

  • No microSD card slot
  • No removable battery
Local storage, the other type of memory, is more of an issue for power users, with 32GB and 64GB configurations.

Seems to last a good day on the battery, others who tested the phone found the same.

NOT WATERPROOF!

I like it but am going to wait for the expandable memory!

KICKSTARTER!

Bublcam

www.bublcam.com/
  • The Bublcam. The world's first spherical camera. Capable of capturing the world around you in spherical photos and videos with absolutely no blind spots.

Part2

Do we need the new iPhones?

Why iOS9!

And not too long ago the darling of corporate and secure messaging was Blackberry and today there is a very new story… and what? Android and Blackberry are in kahoots?

Blackberry embraces android?
Microsoft office 2016 this is cool!

-collaboration is the key!

OFFICE EVERYWHERE, FINALLY

Here's the thing, though: Even if Office 2016 is a bit of a disappointment if you judge it as a great big major software upgrade with an emphasis on teamwork, Office is in the best overall shape it's been in for many years. It's the only product in its category that's available in just about any form you want to use it: on Windows PCs, on Macs, on every viable mobile operating system, and on the web. The versions aren't all identical, but the interface makes sense across all the editions and every incarnation is solid in its own right.

Finally this guys has a cool job! and is cool!
This week's guest is Matt Navarra, social media director at The Next Web (TNW), who explains what skills are needed to keep up with the fast-moving chatter on social and to find great stories.
What would you focus on if you were training to work in digital media today?
  • Understand what the current trends in digital journalism are and what challenges it is facing.
  • Identify the predicted industry developments in an effort to keep up.
  • Build a great network of digital/social media contacts on Twitter by using lists.
  • Engage in online discussions with well-known influencers in the industry.
What skills do you think are important to your role?

Multi-tasking and working at speed – scanning TweetDeck, checking social media monitoring tools, and keeping up with email as well as conversations with your editorial team is no simple task when it gets busy.

Research and data analytics – spotting a random Facebook post or curious tweet that sparks your curiosity often leads you into a quick bit of ad-hoc research to investigate if there is a story to be told. Knowing where to look and what tools to use to search for key information is crucial when navigating the maze of social media for news.

Copywriting and social intuition – one of the hardest skills to learn is how to write a must-read headline for a tweet, Facebook post or similar. It requires you to know what your readership loves, and how they like content introduced.

You also need a bit of a ‘social sixth-sense’. Sometimes you just know when a quirky off-beat story is going to blow up and go viral, leading you to jump on it fast and drive up traffic and engagement for your publication.

Two points about fuel. 1. Prices are not deregulated, they are fully regulated, but set monthly with reference to some selected market prices. 2. The distribution cost only is subsidized, and over time, the subsidy is likely to be reduced, removed out made negative! Martin.
