GetFitRadio with Innerfight June 12, 2017

Fitness is on your mind and this week we sit down with Andre from Innerfight and talk about your fitness questions and more.

This guy has the answers!

We had a lot to talk about and here is a look at the show notes and links.

-love to kick off with a recap of some of your 3 minute podcasts
-taking total ownership
-fear and achievement

-what keeps you motivated? We spoke a while ago, in passing, and you said you have the best job on the planet!

Q. Marcus, I am looking for a set of bodyweight exercises to help improve my lower back strength any suggestions where I should start?

Q. I know you guys have spoken about supplements before, do we need them, I see all the kiosks and shops and feel maybe I am missing something?

Q. How do you talk to clients about thinking beyond weight issues when they come to the gym?

-I came across this great article about learning from injuries.

Injuries Bring Awareness, Always

One of the highest-order goals of any fitness journey is stronger self-awareness. This includes body awareness, but also a deeper awareness of how best to care for and nourish yourself in all aspects of life. A fitness journey can be a gateway to a deeper level of introspection. However, regardless of our best efforts to notice, feel, and ultimately learn from everything that arises in our training, we will inevitably miss something. Even the most body-aware coaches and athletes will miss critical lessons leading them further down the path toward injury.

Reframe Your Injury

Resist allowing your injury to tell you that you are not as good/aware/strong/mobile/capable as you thought you were. Rather, let it say:
  • “I want to make you better.”
  • “I want to show your something that you haven’t seen yet.”
  • “I want you to work on something that you didn’t yet understand as important.”
While most of the time outside our conscious control, injuries are never random. When playing detective we can often look back to connect previously-seeming disparate dots. The inspiration for this article comes from my most recent injury, an inguinal hernia. While I had no idea that I was slowly developing this injury, I can now look back to understand the factors that created the perfect conditions for it to arise.

Q. What does walking with a weight fully extended in my hand above my head help build?

Q. How important is it it learn the technique of exercise before jumping  into them full speed ahead? How do you deal with people in their 30’s who are still living in their 20s glory?

Q. Can you suggest any shoulder exercises I am chained to a desk

Q. My coach is telling me to work smarter not harder what do you think that really mean?

Q. was reading an article squats vs deadlifts what are your thoughts on which to do 1st?
Start with the lift that you are weaker at. But in general, the squat is a more technical lift that requires a greater attention to detail. Also, be aware that there is a lot of carryover with both exercises, as the low back is taxed while performing them. And while I don’t normally recommend doing both on the same day, it can be advantageous to lifters who are looking to improve these lifts, since performing them more often will improve your proficiency in them. For this option, keep the load between 73% to 93%.

Q. What makes intervals such a great exercise technique?
Not so long ago, many scientists thought that people who reach a certain age should, well, slow down a bit. But a new study that tested the effect that weightlifting and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) have on muscles challenges that notion.
After 12 weeks, researchers found that while weight lifting was most effective at building muscle strength, only high-intensity training (alone or in combination with strength training) changed participants’ muscles at the cellular level. More specifically, HIIT boosted the energy producing capacity in the exercisers’ cells, helping turn them from sluggish to supercharged. In the older participants (age 65 to 80), HIIT even seemed to help halt the natural age-related decline in their muscles’ ability to function at a high level.
“If people have to pick one exercise, I would recommend high-intensity interval training,” says study author Sreekumaran Nair, M.D., a diabetes researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “But I think it would be more beneficial if they could do three to four days of interval training and then a couple days of strength training.”

The Safest Way to Start HIIT

So how do you go about incorporating HIIT into your exercise routine, especially if you’re, um, mature, and not exactly an elite athlete? Follow these four steps.
Establish a fitness base. Before you introduce brief periods of all-out effort into your workout, you need to have a solid base of aerobic fitness. For someone who’s been sedentary until now, that means two to four weeks of general strength and cardiovascular fitness, says Cris Dobrosielski, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise and the owner of Monumental Results in San Diego, where he often works with an older clientele. “Start with a 10-minute walk and build to 20 or 30 minutes three days a week,” he says.
Introduce HIIT gradually. “I’m a firm believer in the concept of gradual progression, no matter your age,” says Dobrosielski. Once you’re comfortable with walking 20 to 30 minutes three days a week, consider adding some brief, high-intensity intervals during one of those workouts. (See below for a sample workout).
Recover fully between intervals. The safest way to incorporate HIIT into a beginner workout is to allow for ample recovery time between intervals, says Mary Edwards, fitness director for Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas. “I might have a beginner exerciser work at high intensity for 15 to 30 seconds, and then actively recover at an easy pace for two to four minutes.”
As your fitness improves, shorten your rest periods. “The more fit a person is, the quicker they recover” says Edwards. Use your Fitbit tracker to gauge how quickly your heart rate drops after an intense effort, and then adjust your recovery time accordingly.

The Best HIIT Workout for Beginners

Ready to give HIIT a try? This workout, from Dobrosielski, incorporates periods of light jogging, which studies have shown can add up to three years to your life. It should be safe for anyone who has been exercising consistently for a month, but don’t push yourself past what you’re comfortable doing. Seek a doctor’s opinion before starting, if necessary.

Q. why is logging workouts, food … a good idea?

REASON #3: YOU’RE WATCHING YOUR SALT INTAKE

If your doctor tells you to limit salt in your diet, food logging can help you spot the sneaky sources. Start inputting your meals and snacks, especially packaged and prepared foods, which contribute more than 75 percent of the sodium in the average American diet. (Pro tip: The barcode scanner in the Fitbit app is useful for quick logging.) Once you’ve been doing it for a few days, log into your Fitbit dashboard online, and navigate to your food log (click “log” at the top, then “food”) to see your total daily intake of sodium.

REASON #4: YOU’RE CUTTING CARBS

Following a low-carb diet? Cutting back, or completely eliminating, certain foods can cause you to miss out on essential nutrients, like fiber. Log your meals and snacks for a few days, then go to your online dashboard and check to see if you’re getting the recommended daily amount (25 grams for women and 38 grams for men). To avoid a sluggish gut, do it before your system gets clogged.

REASON #5: YOU’RE ATTEMPTING TO GAIN MUSCLE

To bulk up you need to partner a good exercise program with a solid nutrition strategy. Logging your food intake for a few days can help you understand how many additional calories you need to gain weight. Then, it’s important to keep tracking, to make sure you’re getting those extra calories and to balance your macros. Getting the right amount of protein immediately after your workouts is key for building muscle mass.

REASON #7: YOU EXERCISE A LOT

If your fitness goals include breaking tape or getting an age-group podium spot, eating right is just as important as your training plan. Current thinking suggests competitive athletes (and those who work out like them) benefit from manipulating calories and macros according to training level and intensity. So when you’re training hard your body should be getting more calories and carbs, and during rest and taper weeks you can ease up. Food logging can help you get into the nitty gritty of those numbers, and hit all of your performance goals.
Spending a week logging your food and getting to know all the nutrition features offered in the Fitbit app can be eye-opening. You’ll get a big picture view of your calorie needs, and be able to keep an eye on your macros. And digging into even more data in your online dashboard might reveal places where you can improve (so long, sneaky salt; hello, whole grains and fiber!). What you discover about your eating can help keep you on the path toward achieving your personal health and fitness goals.

A Friend of Nightline needs your Help.

This is very unusual for me, to post a letter from a friend in my BLOG, but I know so many of you are looking for ways to engage with global communities for change.

Read this and please do what you can!

Hi,

My wife Masarat and I are heading next week to Dhaka, Bangladesh and then Fatehpur, Rajasthan to organise two 8-Day Academies in Dhaka and a TEDx conference in a rural town in Rajasthan. Here is what we will be doing during our trip as described by Masarat.

8-Day Academy [http://www.8dayacademy.org] is my initiative to help rural communities gain necessary and education and skills (in just eight days) that empowers them. So far, these sessions have been conducted in Rajasthan--the most illiterate state in India. Six sessions of 8DA have been completed which has changed the lives of hundreds of people in small villages here. The next two sessions will be in Dhaka, Bangladesh in a slum community where as you can imagine, the condition is very backward. I will be training children and women who will then continue the cycle of 8DA and teach this to more than 600 people.

The next project that I do is TEDx Shekhavati. If you know about TED conferences (www.ted.com), you'll know how inspiring and life-changing the talks at this conference are. I have been a speaker at TEDxDubai 2009 and then went on to organise the first TEDx in rural India called TEDxShekhavati. Shekhavati is the cluster of villages and small towns that I work in. I felt that instead of working with 40-50 people at a time, I need to target the larger community so it was important to bring the values of TED to the village. You can read about the conference and the difficulties I had to face in organising it, here:

http://blog.ted.com/2010/01/tedxshekhavatia.php

More than 1,200 people attended the event and many of them were inspired to create community projects that not only helped themselves but also set a positive example for their communities.

On February 5, 2011 I am organising a second edition of this conference. This time, there will be two conferences (2-3 hours each) on one day. One will be for grown-ups and the other will be for children. The issues that both these categories deal with are quite different.

I am fundraising to organise this conference because it's very hard for me to get corporate sponsors for an event like this. Nobody wants to advertise in a village and usually if they do, they prefer to tamper with my speaker list, often adding people from their own company who don't necessarily have a story to tell. This TEDx has become a source for people to learn about new things and show them how they can be better people. You can contribute for the two events on our 8-Day Academy webiste: http://www.8dayacademy.org/fundraising

If you have friends or family who are willing to contribute money to help me organising TEDx and my 8-Day Academy, that would be great. In totality, for both events, I'm looking to squeeze it in AED20000. Of course, you don't have to cover the whole amount! One of the biggest cost is the venue setup for the TEDx--because there are no auditoriums or halls in the village, we construct a tent from scratch and use special projectors so that a large 1000+ audience can view it properly.

Thoughts on Architecture? In Dubai

There sure are a lot of buzz killers here in Dubai!

And I still think you can compare the architecture and development in Dubai to any country or city.

If you want to play the history card then lets just look since 1960 at what is and has been done!

TEDIndia in conversation!

www.ted.com

TEDIndia: The Future Beckons

Even the site of our conference is a powerful metaphor for the reshaped world of the 21st century. It's being held at the incredible high-tech campus built by Infosys to train its thousands of engineering graduates, representing the heart of the Asian outsourcing industry. We can think of no more appropriate place to gather to think about tomorrow.

Details of the speaker program will be revealed approximately 2 months prior to the conference (as is always the case with TED events), but it’s already shaping up to be an extraordinary line-up. Speakers will include India’s most promising innovators, from entrepreneurs to artists, storytellers to scientists. And about one third of the program will come from outside India. We’ll hear from celebrated global icons as well as undiscovered talent that’s due broader recognition.

Some of the questions we’re planning to tackle:

  • Which local innovations are destined for global impact?
  • Who are the young thinkers and doers capable of shaping the future?
  • Can there be economic advancement without environmental destruction?
  • Can a pluralistic democracy survive in the face of rising fundamentalism?
  • Can we make money and be good? Really?
  • What should we learn – or fear? -- from China’s investment in Africa?
  • Do we have enough water for everyone?
  • How do we keep our youth challenged and our aged healthy?
  • How can anti-poverty solutions be brought to scale?
  • Is there wisdom to be found in traditional medicine??
  • Which other ancient traditions can illuminate modern life?

Dec 23---what we do!

We started the night by asking a simple question... wht do you do to get through the holiday season...

No simple answers.

But what did come about were stories of people missing family or how they have come together with friends to make a difference.

Farah and her friends visit people in hospitals! Not just during the holidays!

Want to join this growing band of do gooders?

Call Farah @ 050-481-3223

Then there is Abdullah and his friends who want to start a recent history journal to share the stories of Dubai.

What an idea!

Have you lived here forever? Have you sen Dubai change? Do you have a story?

Abdulla @ 050-698-9566

And what is another great way to make friends?

Off road driving in the desert and you can go even if you do not have wheels!

May 21--- Change it all Thomas Style.

Thomas Lundgren chief of the coloured socks and the FUNKMIESTER of the One talked about why the world is all screwed up.

Why?

Think a total lack of Uhhhh duhhhh...

PASSION!
CONVICTION!

oh and...

Bad RULES! That people continue to follow like sheep to the slaughter.

And of course because Thomas owns the ONE he can do what ever he wants.

Hmmm... how to net get too bored once you have made the concept work is a huge issue and Thomas has tackled that one head on.

Coloured socks.

Or maybe see how far you can push the world towards actually caring.

OK we care, the dirt cares but what about the nameless, faceless governments and commercial entities?

Exactly someone needs to take a bit more responsibility.

OK a lot more!

Curious what others say about Thomas?

But some might say it is easy to talk big when you are big... and I don't think Thomas needs to lose weight.

The reality is you have to go with your gut and at some point trust you!

I sure wish my students would listen to Thomas and maybe try to do 1% of what he suggests.

Have passion for what you believe and start the IDEAVIRUS!

Here are my 3 favorite slides from the 'THOMAS SHOW'!

Mental note to IIR---they brought us the innovation forum!

Tom Peters is great BUT here is a guy doing Peters and the rest of the gang of merry speakers, maybe you should have Thomas on stage talking to the theory from the angle of someone who knows? Asking questions from a pink chair maybe?

And bring James along for good measure.

Imagine measuring success by emotion per square meter?

Time that we all took a little more charge of our lives and didn't allow big business to call the shots, unless they are doing it with love! Yea maybe if it snows in the empty quarter that will happen...

But Thomas is leading the way, sure hope the crowd follows...

May 20th---expectation of Arab World

Tonight we are going to talk about two ideas that are seemingly unrelated but very related!

1st is the idea that the Arab world is predicated on oppression.

This idea was advanced in a recent editorial in the Gulf News by a political scientist at UAE University.

2nd the benefit of a $10 billion foundation to improve literacy in the Arab World!

Maybe the two are more related than meets the eye?

The general view over the evening is that this is a great thing for the UAE and the region.

BUT the how it is rolled out will tell all!

Can a new system really be implanted when there is skepticism at large about western interests?

Will education change political ideals?

Is democracy what the world needs?

The reality is nothing can happen over night so we need to be patient but have very high expectations!

A good question is will the foundation aim its efforts at Arabs or the huge expat population that also lives in the region?

One thing if for sure there are more questions than answers at this point...

Stay tuned to this space!

May 8--- what are we doing with our knowledge?

Ok we have amazing conferences.

We have examples of amazing ideas around us.

We have people doing amazing projects.

So how are we taking these great things and making them common practice?

I wonder if we simply are not?

www.innovatearabia.com

Why go?

TOM PETERS

Last night when asked are we innovative the answers were all over the map!

Some say we have the wrong attitude and need to change it to be more innovative. Maybe.

Others say it is the system.

Government departments are too old school.

Trade permits... too much hassle.

And then there is the question of seed funds.

Maybe we need more small business development managers!

Maybe we need things tilted in favour of you and I!

Are you innovative?

Why not?
