June 18---we are what we eat!
How much attention do you pay to the food you are eating?
Is too little attention given tot he quality of food and the quality of the environment it is being consumed in?
Hygiene is the issue!
Have a complain in Dubai call 800 900.
If you want information on education call 206-4201.
Part of the problem we face in Dubai is simply the vast number of cultures and their idea of what hygiene is.
# of restaurants in Dubai 1,044
# of Cafeterias 563
# of Cafes 244
# of food inspectors 110
The municipality has a grading system from A to E and fines to go with the grades and violations.
The number of food places with an A rating? 2-3% ONLY!
There was a call to name and shame those who are poor at hygiene and name those at the top.
There is a 10% increase in the number of food establishments in Dubai each year!
11,000 people dealing with food go for municipality training yearly.
But what we still need to see in the UAE is HACCP or critical control point coverage for food distribution.
One caller has the answer!
www.globaltrace.com
Through this service you know where the food is and that it has been handled in an appropriate manner until it reaches its final storage then it is all up tot he kitchen staff!
There is no question that the municipality is working hard BUT the work has to also come from those slinging plates and making it as healthy an activity as possible.

June 17---Minister of Education
Sunday we will be speaking with Dr. Hanif, Minister of Education in the UAE.
We are going to talk about the private/public or Emirati/expat divide in education in the UAE.
How to keep education relevant.
The issue that came up over and over via the callers was accountability of the education system.
Some suggestions were made to the effect that schools in the UAE are being created at such a pace that they really are clueless.
Dr. Hanif suggested that there is growing decentralization within the Ministry of Education allowing for more attention to be paid to areas such as private education.
Maybe education could benefit form a corporate subsidy? How? Labour costs are levied to help support education?
The best question by far was whether or not we have actually lost sight of the objective of education!

june 12---Justice
So what is justice to you?
Do we have JUSTICE in the UAE?
the quality of being just or fair the administration of law; the act of determining rights and assigning rewards or punishments; "justice deferred is justice denied" judge: a public official authorized to decide questions brought before a court of justice Department of Justice: the United States federal department responsible for enforcing federal laws (including the enforcement of all civil rights legislation); created in 1870
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn Justice is a concept involving the fair, moral, and impartial treatment of all persons, especially in law. It is often seen as the continued effort to do what is "right." In most of all cases what one regards as "right" is determined by consulting the majority, employing logic, or referring to divine authority, in the case of religion. If a person lives under a certain set law in a certain country, justice is considered making the person follow the law and be punished if not.

A group of teachers and staff from Beacon Education went to Nepal to train teachers!
Imagine!
Where does the line between hegemony begin and end?

June 10---- illegally working in the UAE
We talked about part-time work and the fact that there is a gery line here as far as legality is concerned!
In the UAE it is technically illegal to work part-time if you are on the sponsorship of someone.
But people do work part time and do advertise to do so... all illegal!
So, what to do?

June 6--- Emirati youth on all sorts of things!
Following on a theme over the last 5 months, getting to know the UAE youth, I had 3 men and 2 women join me in studio.

June 5---Botched Surgery !
What happens in the UAE if the surgery you trust will be done professionally goes wrong?
Here is a story to make you think hard about the medical profession as it is played out in the UAE today!

According to the Minister of Health in the UAE "we don't have a medical law that defines the responsibilities of the practitioners or the hospitals towards any negligence..."
Uhhhh... so, if you go to the doctor, a person you trust with your life and they get it wrong you are left to the criminal or civil courts and the simple retort that medicine is not an exact thing?
Dr. Sandy Fowler talking about his wife beryl Comar's 6 year odyssey with malpractice and said that doctors when they arrive here know there is no governing body overseeing the profession and that there is no medical practitioners society!
What is needed according to Fowler is protection for both the patient and the practitioner alike!
Last night the story was BEWARE!
Many suggested that if you have the least bit of concern about the medical treatment you are up for go abroad!
Some have said that this is a blip and that things will change soon and fast.

June 4 Amnesty for illegal labour.
The UAE cabinet has put a law in motion to crack down on illegal labour int he UAE.
3 months amnesty to come clean!
Why now? The new labour law is soon going to come into force and only if the rules are being followed does a labour law have any teeth.
But the question that was raised is who should actually be punished the labour or the person using it?
Who is to blame for labour exploitation?
Are we as a society ready to say, "yes we will pay more and no we will not hire the cheap illegal labour to get the job done?"
I wonder?
And if the illegal labour decided they want to leave who will pay?
Some suggestions have been made that illegal labour accounts for as many as 300, 000 workers and many are in the construction field!
Are we ready for a work slowdown?
Are we ready for the inflationary pressure that might be caused if 300,000 people leave?
There are a lot of questions to be answered and maybe then we can revisit the situation.

Being a bachelor in the UAE!
Well there is no shortage of opinion when it comes to the plight of the bachelor in the UAE!
So what is the issue?
It has been suggested that over 50% of the UAE population is SINGLE!
And this 50% of the population, mostly male, is not being treated like everyone else and why not?
Part of the problem is people taking advantage of singles!
Some singles find themselves living in villas, with 30 others, paying up to 800 dirhams a month for bed space!
Others are saying that the problem the UAE is facing with singles is rapid URBANIZATION.
Urbanization can and will create a ghetto system and will see a minority gaining a popular foot hold over others.
Some say that the issue is simply discrimination!
Is the best thing in the case of singles to put them in separate areas to live?
It was suggested that this may be more than a simple moral issue!
What we are dealing with today is RAW CAPITALISM and maybe when all the dust settles the state will step in and solve the inequities that are the product of development!
