Sue Oates takes a challenge and needs 50,000 dirhams

Sue Oates is a teacher at Uptown Primary School who decided to do something different to celebrate turning 50!

My story

sue.oates@uptownprimary.ae is how to contact Sue.
http://www.justgiving.com/Sue-Oates

On 1st December 2009 I became 50 years old and wanted to mark this year of being 50 with a trek for charity.

I happened to buy the Health and Fitness magazine that announced the trek to Machu Picchu in October 2010. It is somewhere I've always wanted to go and I wanted to raise money for the chosen charity of Breast Cancer Research. I have been lucky to not have any close relatives or friends that have been affected by breast cancer but I have read many stories and the statistics are frightening. I feel that the money raised will help future women avoid or fight this terrible disease.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity. So please dig deep and donate now. January 2010 I am working on a series of money raising events at the school where I work. I plan to run a lucky ticket draw in February so am collecting prizes at the moment.
Donna from school is going to help me run a Car Boot Sale on Friday 19th February we're hopeful that a lot of people are keen to sell stuff- should be good!

Gulf 4 Good

Podcast available

We had a great conversation about www.gulf4good.org.

Gulf for Good has four main objectives:-
  1. to bring together Gulf nationals and residents in a good cause;
  2. to encourage people to push their own limits;
  3. to show people the value and enjoyment of motivation, commitment and helping others;
  4. to raise large sums for worthwhile projects.
Money raised through each challenge is spent on worthwhile projects in the area in which the challenge takes place.

Gulf for Good is a Dubai based charity under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

By taking part in a Gulf for Good adventure challenge, participants raise funds which are then donated to handpicked charities in the region where the challenge is held.

The challenges available are a mixture of moderate to strenuous adventures, ranging from high altitude treks to hiking, biking, kayaking and even camel trekking in magnificant landscapes. Our challenges allow you to access areas you may only dreamed of visiting, in the company of like-minded individuals.

AVERDA on Waste as Good

We spoke to Walid Shaar of Averda about the new paradigm of thought needed with waste today. By William McDonough & Michael Braungart
North Point Press, 2002
<<> | Shop Locally through BookSense | Order from Amazon

William McDonough's book, written with his colleague, the German chemist Michael Braungart, is a manifesto calling for the transformation of human industry through ecologically intelligent design. Through historical sketches on the roots of the industrial revolution; commentary on science, nature and society; descriptions of key design principles; and compelling examples of innovative products and business strategies already reshaping the marketplace, McDonough and Braungart make the case that an industrial system that "takes, makes and wastes" can become a creator of goods and services that generate ecological, social and economic value.

In Cradle to Cradle, McDonough and Braungart argue that the conflict between industry and the environment is not an indictment of commerce but an outgrowth of purely opportunistic design. The design of products and manufacturing systems growing out of the Industrial Revolution reflected the spirit of the day-and yielded a host of unintended yet tragic consequences.

Today, with our growing knowledge of the living earth, design can reflect a new spirit. In fact, the authors write, when designers employ the intelligence of natural systems—the effectiveness of nutrient cycling, the abundance of the sun's energy—they can create products, industrial systems, buildings, even regional plans that allow nature and commerce to fruitfully co-exist.

Cradle to Cradle maps the lineaments of McDonough and Braungart's new design paradigm, offering practical steps on how to innovate within today's economic environment. Part social history, part green business primer, part design manual, the book makes plain that the re-invention of human industry is not only within our grasp, it is our best hope for a future of sustaining prosperity.

In addition to describing the hopeful, nature-inspired design principles that are making industry both prosperous and sustainable, the book itself is a physical symbol of the changes to come. It is printed on a synthetic 'paper,' made from plastic resins and inorganic fillers, designed to look and feel like top quality paper while also being waterproof and rugged. And the book can be easily recycled in localities with systems to collect polypropylene, like that in yogurt containers. This 'treeless' book points the way toward the day when synthetic books, like many other products, can be used, recycled, and used again without losing any material quality—in cradle to cradle cycles.

Healthandmore.me

www.healthandmore.me

Doris Brauner joined me in studio to talk about the unique approach to health diagnosis she is working with.

Info@healthandmore.me

Welcome to Health and More :.

The First Website For Holistic Diagnosis and Therapy via Entangled Photons

The Health And More scan offers treatment through the latest technology made in Germany.
Using knowledge from Quantum Physics, and both alternative and modern school medicine, the scan offers diagnosis and treatment independent of time and space.

Quantum Physics offers the most accurate scientific explanation of the world and is the only theory that has proven to be 100% proof through all experiments.

With new state of the art technology Health And More scans Entangled Photons found in all matter and analyzes the gained data. Over years of research and practical use, we have accumulated a vast Database ranging from medicine to psychology, religion and many other aspects of our life.

The Health and More treatment has proven to be highly efficient and we are proud to have many satisfied customers from all over the World.

Dear Client,

I am the Head and the Heart of Health and More and am looking back at 30 years of experience in alternative medicine, traditional medicine and as a healer in my own clinic. More than 20 years ago I founded my laboratory for medical analysis of blood, urine and stool. In all these years I educated many people in the medical field worldwide. - Healers, doctors, etc. Many alternative treatment methods are named after me. For example Urine function diagnosis, Own nosode, Brauning, tongue diagnosis, etc. I am the author of 14 medical books and many teaching materials. Since 1987 I have been named in every “WHO IS WHO” worldwide.
In 1997 I made the first experience with photons. However only much later I realized which immense possibilities this diagnosis and treatment actually offers.

To me it is a part of the medicine of the future.

In 2006 I experienced the power of the entangled photon treatment on myself. I had a triple rupture of the spine and could have been paralyzed. Without the scan I would probably sit in a wheelchair today. The discovery of the rupture and also the treatment throughout the operation helped me to a fast recovery. Already 2 weeks after the operation, where 4 screws were placed in my spine during a 9 hour surgery, I was back at work in my own clinic. It is understood that I had very good surgeons; however I ascribe the recovery and absorption of the operation without any pain, cell memory or pain fixation in the brain, to the entangled photon treatment.

Since this day I work day and night, in every free minute, in order to improve the system to receive even more exact results. I have invested a fortune into this knowhow and financially mobilized everything that I could. I don’t mind when people look at this treatment with disbelief and would like to remind everyone that until not even 20 years ago nobody could imagine that mail could be sent via the internet while today almost everybody simply accepts it as understood without even knowing how an email reaches from one person to another. – It is sufficient to know that it works.

Today I know that this spinal rupture had to happen so that I would continue on this path for the wellbeing of our clients. 98% of our clients are satisfied and give us a positive feedback.

Sincere regards,

Doris Brauner

MENALAB

Giorgio & James - MENALAB2010

Giorgio and James will be running LAB 03 from the 30 of Jan to the 4th of Feb.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ideas in unexpected places..

TASMENA is a newly formed NPO, based in UAE, whose mandate is to create a space for people to connect, discuss, collaborate, learn and contribute to society through design. TASMENA aims to bring about social changes in environmental, humanitarian, cultural, health, education, etc through laboratories, workshops, competitions, conferences and community initiatives.

MENAlab, a TASMENA pilot project, will be offering an intensive five-day interdisciplinary laboratory open to anyone interested in participating in a dynamic, creative, intensive and collaborative environment. | The tutors for these labs and studios were selected through an exclusive call for proposals. | There will be eight exciting laboratory sessions running concurrently. All labs will address various topics of design ranging from art, architecture, documentaries, fashion, film, photography, storytelling, technology, urbanism, and visual communication. | We hope these lab sessions will enable designers and non-designers in the academic and industry sectors to share their experiences and integrate their daily practices into the community at large; in order to establish critical discussions beyond ideological, disciplinary and cultural boundaries. | These dialogues, discussed within such a collaborative environment, will help to address societal, cultural and economic issues in Dubai; ultimately working towards an understanding and diverse interpretation of this years topic, "Designing Change."

We would appreciate it if you could spread the news to your own community. We are not advertising this event, because of our belief that this is a grassroots movement that will spread to the community, by the community.

We would like for you to inform us of the approximate number of potential attendees of students and other participants from your community via e-mail first. It would greatly help us at TASMENA to prepare the logistic details for each laboratory.

Thank you so much for your support and looking forward to your involvement.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

the TASMENA team.

Mishaal Al Gergawi on his UAE

Mishaal Al Gergawi joins me for a conversation about what he sees as the future of the UAE.

Mishaal is a poplar columnist in the Gulf News

A nice sample of his work!

Dubai needs more young entrepreneurs

Growth could depend on encouraging people to become more independent.

There is much discussion and debate both inside and outside the walls of government offices about what Dubai should do next. Very few people expect real estate to ever return as a key driver of foreign investment and ultimately growth. Various alternatives have been discussed and debated, namely tourism, culture and - to a certain extent - niche industries.

Before contributing to the debate on Dubai's way forward, one of its most crucial and exciting phases yet, one must put this next period in the context of what the city has always aimed to be - a true metropolis serving as an important economic, political and cultural axis for the region, as well as a central hub for regional and international connections and communications.

The prominent idea so far is that with solid tourism-oriented infrastructure (hotels, malls and theme parks), together with vibrant cultural attractions (festivals and fairs as well as a nascent creative community), an economic shift could realistically occur whereby the focus switches to adding value and the 'tulip mania' mindset is dropped.

Service providers would have to compete globally for business, which would in turn increase both creativity and competitiveness. The conference business and medical tourism are other obvious complementary sub-industries. While these feed off the same basic infrastructure, with additional incentives and rebate systems, they could become significant contributors to the economy.

Yet there seems to be a missing ingredient, something as basic as what salt contributes to a complicated signature dish. I believe our missing 'salt' is entrepreneurship. Dubai's economy is controlled by the government and a small number of old, established family businesses - talk about Russian and Iranian investors controlling the market is incredibly exaggerated. It is conceded today by many that working for the government is preferable to setting up a business.

I have been able to spend time with friends this Ramadan who are young Emirati entrepreneurs who have struck out on their own in the hope of establishing themselves and becoming independent both financially and creatively. Two run a magazine, another sells water and espresso machines and another provides fire safety equipment and consultancy.

I asked them how their businesses were going. While some detailed how business had slowed since the economic crisis, they all cited challenges that predated it. When I asked what those challenges were, they said they were all related to the government in one way or another:

The government set up an incubator some years back that initially had a large budget for supporting young Emirati entrepreneurs. Eventually it became clear that funding was not easy to obtain and although many start-ups became members of the organisation, very few actually received funding.

The same entity offered to waive incorporation fees for businesses that were approved members. In the view of many businesses, this was more attractive than funding because it gave start-ups breathing space. Sadly, this has been done away with due to the economic crisis.

It is inconceivable for entrepreneurs to emerge when the government virtually aims to vertically integrate all sectors and become the most competitive supplier of goods and services.

Government employees are paid high salaries. This has made them too comfortable, risk-averse and lacking in entrepreneurial ambition.

In summary, a serious change in the government's mindset towards entrepreneurship is required. In many instances, the government is increasingly finding itself in a position where it is competing directly with the private sector.

The combination of this and the high fees which serve as a pseudo taxation regime will make it very difficult for anyone to contemplate setting up a business. No one is asking for their hands to be held, but some form of incubation is required.

A case in point: a business park set up to incubate businesses was leased at market prices! It would make more sense to encourage the founders of companies when they are just getting started rather than to woo established giants like Microsoft. That's what Silicon Valley did, and just look at what's come out of that.

If this persists, the challenge that Dubai faces is not one of booms and busts but rather one of long-term regional competitiveness. To continue to be complacent about supporting entrepreneurship would eventually stifle the UAE as a competitive nation. Good businesses need to be run by young, hungry men and women, not well-compensated government executives with comfortable mortgages.

To put matters in context, the costs of running a city like Dubai will continue to increase and if entrepreneurs do not emerge, then any form of taxation will become virtually inconceivable because most people will probably be working for the government.

Ultimately, if the city continues to embrace big government and the majority of the population works directly or indirectly for it, then we will potentially be walking the dark path of socialism without even knowing it until it is too late.

Like all things facing Dubai today, this is a question of investing in a long term-strategy that will create a mature and sustainable economy, as opposed to setting short-term goals here and there - something that I increasingly hear these days being referred to as quick wins. No, thank you - I want a few slow wins rather than many transient, quick ones.

Moe 'n Matt Live

Moe 'n Matt are the Emirati dream team, they are living their dreams and doing some of the wildest activities on the globe! And they are just 2 ordinary guys with day jobs.

Help Team Moe and Matt raise a mountain of cash to tackle malaria

Team Moe n Matt will be going up, up, up to the snows of Mount Kilimanjaro this February, Africa’s highest point at 5,895 metres. Leading the expedition will be Arab mounting-climbing pioneer, Zed Al Refai, the first Arab to summit Mt. Everest and complete the Seven Summits challenge. Other trekkers attempting the ascent include businessmen from Europe and the Middle East, all with a thirst for adventure.

To reach any summit at 5,895 metres above sea level is a major physical and psychological challenge, especially when that summit rises more than 4,600m from the plains of northern Tanzania (making it the world’s highest free standing peak).

This will be the biggest physical challenge that myself, Moe, and my team of trekkers will face. We’ll be hindered by sleepless nights, pushing through gale-force winds, contending with stifling jungle, snakes and spiders, battling temperatures of minus 15 and suffering altitude sickness, dehydration and aching muscles. Our lungs will be strained to bursting in the thin cold air and even a shoelace-tying attempt could lay the fittest person low on Kilimanjaro’s upper reaches.

But we are determined to summit the highest peak in Africa and raise money to fight malaria, Africa’s biggest killer.

About 3.3 billion people – half of the world's population – are at risk of malaria. In Tanzania alone (the home of Mount Kilimanjaro), malaria is the leading killer of children with one child dying EVERY 30 SECONDS… that’s over one million lives tragically lost every single year.

By the time you've read this, a child in Africa will have died of malaria.

Support our every step and stumble up to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro by sponsoring us and donating money to our cause. Every penny counts and even a small amount of money can make a big difference and help protect and save lives.

ALL donations received will go directly to Malaria Consortium – a charity that is dedicated to the control of malaria and works exceptionally hard to ease the devastation caused by the killer disease. Just £5 will pay for a net to protect two lives and £100 will pay for effective life-saving malaria treatment for 200 children.

You can donate from anywhere in the world as long as you have a credit/debit card. You can only donate in pounds sterling (£GBP), so please work out how much you would like to donate in pounds and JustGiving will charge the equivalent amount in your local currency. This currency conversion website will help: http://www.xe.com/ucc

On a less somber note, Matt will attempt the highest chicken dance in the world at the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. You saw him ‘Sheikhing his thing’ back at sea level, now witness him go all out at the Roof of Africa. Keep in mind that our Facebook group has to reach over 2,000 members for him to perform it.

See you at the Roof of Africa!

Moe n Matt

On a hot summer afternoon, on the streets of Santa Barbara as still as the night, quiet before the storm, the crowd will arrive on the next morning and the tarmac will be burning with rubber for the rest of the week, gasoline will fill the yet aromatic air with fumes of fury...

Its Gumball time again!!! This year for the first time ever, myself Moe and my best buddy since childhood Matt will be kicking off the event with a spectacular show of class and style through the streets of America. This years 3000 mile route, an all classic coast to coast rally, will be incorporating stops in Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Dallas, and New Orleans to embellish Gumball's core values of uniting people through popular culture and the unique language of motorcar. The rally will unfortunately end in Miami after seven longs days of crazy driving and absolute fun.

For the past 10 years Gumball 3000 has gained a lot of fans and spectators from all over the world. This year's Gumball has something different to offer. Moe n Matt will raise the bar to a totally different level. We will be implementing our long planned Gumball 3000 trip replicating Prince Abdul Bin Falafel from the 36-hour non-stop race across America in the Cannonball Run produced in 1981. We plan to take-off from Santa Barbara to Miami and only stop for refueling and of course maybe sleep.

In our quest across America we will imitate our character as Prince Abdul Bin Falafel, dressed in our traditional Sheikh attire, we will pursue the quest to avoid being stopped by police using our on-dashboard radar detectors, police scanners and a cool box filled with just ''Red Bull''.

Both of us inspired for our love of cars and longstanding friendship we hope to event a similar role to one our favorite movies. Hopefully with the least amount of tickets, violations and arrests…..

UAE Community Farming Option

Ben Daniels and Shiva Daniels Mouhedi joined me in studio for a conversation about sustainable organic community farming in the UAE.

What a great idea!

Here is the brief.

Sustainable Community Farming.
Mission: Reconnect our society with their food supply chain. A Green Centre for sustainability to encourage active engagement from the community, creating an engaging relationship between the community and nature.
Goal: Create a matrix ecosystem of sustainability both horizontally between organisms and vertically between human social entities.
Vision. A sustainable food supply chain in harmony with nature and in line with human progress and replicable business models.

Concept:
  • Based on layered ecosystems. Foundation of the community overlayed by the commercial sector feeding back into key CSR messaging to the community around understanding sustainability, impact to the environment and personal responsibility and ultimately the understanding of their relationship to the environment. Therefore the majority of the infrastructure costs will be donated by companies that have profited greatly from the economy and now have an opportunity to give back.
  • Each school will use the allotment for educational purposes reconnecting the students with their food supply chain. Central to the project is for schools to include the allotment as a elective subject with one to two hours per week dedicated.
  • 230 Schools in Dubai.
  • 50% for schools and 50% for residents.
  • 200 m2 per residential plot. 200m2 = .02 hectares. Total 5 hectares.
  • 400 m2 per school plot. 400m2 = .04 hectares. Total 10 Hectares.
  • Allocate 15 hectares to a walled Community Farming Centre. Ideally it needs to be located close to the population, not out in the sticks. Close to the population and the security fence a massive billboard illustrating Dubai’s focus on sustainability.
  • Sub-divide the land to plots, similar to the UK allotment system.
  • Members of the community then can secure an allotment for a small fee. The fee would be used toward building/maintaining the facilities/running costs.
  • The members can plant any form of vegetables they like and sell them in the community market.
  • Local Organic Market.
  • Proceeds can be donated to eco projects to build up eco dollars.
  • Excess of local market sold through partners such as the Organic Food Café.
  • Carbon Trading Scheme on DFC including partnership program for sustainability. E.g. enterprises participating in brotherhood sustainability programs can trade carbon credits.
  • All produce would be organic using the bio dynamic approach.
  • Engagement from Local Universities for experimentation, knowledge transfer, local schools, UAE Environmental Agencies, sustainability groups etc..
  • Create a model for sustainable farming in the Middle East that can be replicated through the region and reduce the carbon footprint of ME countries.
  • By reconnecting the community with their food supply chain, we create the consumers of organic and sustainable produce, creating the customers of the organic farmers, hence not competing with them.
  • By engaging school children early, we create awareness that negates the causes of the current diabetes epidemic.
  • Tap social media to create a vibrant online community fostering discussion, knowledge sharing, competition between schools and community members for the most green contributions/eco dollars etc..
  • Create facebook “farmville” like application to foster competition and engagement but with the farms being the real allotments.

2 Dubai entertainment Stars

www.Diversechoreography.com

Lisa and Scott Marshall join me for a conversation about finding opportunity in the UAE.

Who They Are.

We are a husband and wife team who have many years of experience both as dancers and choreographers, whose passion and knowledge of the entertainment industry will prove invaluable here in the U.A.E. We choreograph and produce all varieties of entertainment ranging from TV and music videos to theatre, corporate and fashion shows...hence the name Diverse Choreography. We aim to produce for each individual client an imaginative and exciting show second to none in our field. By sharing our extensive knowledge and passion for creating tailor made shows for each client, you will achieve unique performances for your product and event.

Simply stated, Scott Marshall’s career history reads like a celebrity hit list. The first chapter of Scott’s illustrious story began at the Dance School of Scotland then on to the Laine Theatre Arts College, London where he gained a Diploma in Musical Theatre. The next chapter entailed Scott establishing himself as an industry leading dancer then choreographer and director working throughout Europe training dancers in established studios in all genres. Scott has since mirrored the decades gifted pop and film icons passion for music and drama with his own innate passion for alluring choreography. Unphased by the glitterati, Scott has collaborated with music’s elite in pinnacle events such as the world famous American Music Awards alongside the biggest selling artists in musical history such as Cher on her European Tour. Other than this, Scott’s sonic portfolio contains more collaborations of miasmic proportions; working with contemporary pop artists such as Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Pink, UK pop sirens Girls Aloud, the Sugababes and Jamelia, transient legends such as Dame Shirley Bassey, Michael Buble and Cliff Richards through to classical artists such as Vanessa Mae. Scott’s TV and film experience is equally as remarkable and includes projects such as Beyond the Sea, directed by and starring Kevin Spacey, the jocular hit Johnny English with Rowan Atkinson and Natalie Imbruglia as well as apearing in commercials for multinational brands such as Mazda, Nestlé and the American giant Target. Alas, music and dance are only two constituents of a much larger picture. Scott has choreographed a number of fashion shows, corporate events and launches, working with many fashion designers and brands such as Asian Woman magazine, Orange and Vodafone moblie. And the chances are if you have been to a Nike, H&M or Top fashion show, Scott’s artistic flare would have drawn your attention. And as well as choreographing, Scott has also worked in musical theatre and on the prestigious annual Royal Variety Show in London. Scott’s musical theatre experience has seen him working alongside dance industry names such as Arlene Philips on the production Saturday Night Fever. Scott is also the resident choreographer along the entire P&O cruise liner fleet, The Thursford Christmas Spectacular – The largest Christmas show in the UK and worked on the VE Day Celebrations at the Royal Concert Hall in London attended by the Queen. Since moving to the U.A.E Scott has had his choreographic debut in Dubai at the Emirates Golf Club, for the infamous annual Oil Baron’s Ball and providing dancers for the Shakira Concert at the Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi to name but a few. Needless to say, Scott has unparalleled experience and flair that has and will prove invaluable within the industry.

Lisa Marshall has worked in the entertainments industry for over 10 years. Already, this has been a picture postcard involving the biggest names and projects others could only dream of. After gaining her professional training at the Elmhurst Ballet School in Surrey, UK, and graduating from the Laine Theatre Arts Company with an honours diploma in musical theatre, the seeds of success had been sown and would begin to flourish. Lisa’s prodigious career began in the home of dance – London’s West End. Treading the boards as a professional dancer was only the mere beginnings of her successes in the industry. This soon led to a career change from student to scholar – a change that led to the establishment of her very own company, Diverse Choreography. This ever evolving passion for entertainment has seen Lisa starring as an actress, singer and dancer in West End favourites such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Jus’ like that – a musical comedy about the life of Tommy Cooper. These are but a few entwinements in an impressive tapestry of music and dance. On the big screen, Lisa has worked with many household names and movies that have been enjoyed by millions across the world. Industry legends such as Tim Burton, Stephen Hopkins, Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Charlize Theron jam pack Lisa’s CV, working on sets of movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and If Only. Let’s not forget the small screen, though. Lisa’s experience both as an actor and dancer has seen her grace the screens of millions of UK viewers on major network TV favourites including Bad Girls, Footballers Wives and Top of the Pops as well as presenting roles on cable and the DVD, Dance Party produced for Universal Records. Lisa moved to Dubai in 2008 to become a part of the burgeoning entertainment business in the UAE but still retains a presence in the UK assisting and choreographing productions such as the Thursford Christmas Spectacular, the largest Christmas variety show in Britain. Since her move to Dubai in August Lisa has Choreographed the Middle East’s first annual Alternative Energy Awards; creating a breath taking circus inspired elements show, at The Hilton Hotel, Abu Dhabi, The Diamond and Gold Commodities Conference - Jewelry show, at the prestigious Atlantis Hotel, an event hosted by Mubadala at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi for Ferrari and F1, Shakira at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, Lamborghini Launch and fashion show, Lamborghini show room, Muscat and lastly, invited some of the UKs finest dancers, singers and musicians to the legendary Oil Baron’s Ball at the Emirates Golf Club here in Dubai. She brings with her a wealth of experience as a former professional dancer combined with a passion for innovative, unique choreography.

Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra

A conversation with 3 members of the EYSO.

Zoe Fries

Yannek Fries

The Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra in the UAE was established in 1993 by Mr. Riad Kudsi. Initially it was named Children's String Orchestra. To bring in more youth, in 2006 we changed the name to Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO). The orchestra is dedicated to teaching the universal language of classical music to children and teenagers from primary school to high school. At first the Orchestra consisted of a limited number of students from Mr. Kudsi’s violin teaching practice. In a short period, it began attracting students and musicians from outside. Today there are more than 50 players of violin, viola, cello, double base wind instruments and percussion. Riad Kudsi The children who play in the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra come from many countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, British Ireland, USA, France, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, India, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea among many others. They are joined by a common devotion and love for music, which we believe is the international language for expressing feeling and emotions. The recent Honorary Patronage of HRH Princes Haya Bint Al Hussein wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai has been a great source of hope that one day; this orchestra, festival & conservatory will be adopted by the government of Dubai in order not to waist the 16 years of relentless efforts of our founder and conductor Mr. Riad Kudsi. We are looking forward to and sparing no effort to encourage young musicians living in Dubai especially UAE nationals, to join our orchestra to overcome this constant migration of talent in order to retain our capabilities and feed new blood to a future UAE National Symphony Orchestra which we inspire. EYSO is proud that some of its previous members who completed their academic studies with Mr. Kudsi have gained distinguished musical scholarships to continue their violin studies at the French National Conservatoire, Chethams Music School in England, Indiana University for Music and Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. The Orchestra has repeatedly performed in several International Music Festivals in Czech Republic, France, Kuwait, and Oman. We are constantly invited to performances, festivals and charitable events all over the world. We make every effort to expose our young talents to these events subject to their other scholastic schedules and needs as well as to our budget.
